A New Brunswick mother says she gave birth on the side of a highway because labour and delivery services at her local hospital were closed.
Mariah Jackson says her third child, Liam, was born next to a Trans-Canada Highway marker last month.
She and her partner were driving to the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton, which is an hour away.
Bill Hogan, Progressive Conservative member for the area, says the couple’s story shows the health-care system isn’t improving fast enough.

The New Brunswick government has passed the halfway mark in reaching its goal of opening 30 collaborative health-care clinics by 2028.
The province opened a clinic in Beaurivage yesterday, the 16th clinic to open since April 2025.
The provincial government provided 942-thousand dollars for renovations, overhead coats and recruitment.

Police are looking for a second person allegedly involved in an assault with a weapon in Moncton, New Brunswick, that happened earlier this month.
The Codiac Regional R-C-M-P say on May 2nd, they arrived at a call about an assault on John Street.
Police say two people allegedly approached a man while pointing weapons, but nobody was injured and the suspects fled the scene.
Later that day, police arrested a 19-year-old man from Moncton without incident.
Police are now looking for the second suspect, who’s described as a man, possibly Caucasian, of average height and build. (The Canadian Press)

An independent watchdog says the R-C-M-P mishandled every aspect of a case involving a Nova Scotia woman who had told police she was sexually assaulted by a neighbour who later killed her.
In 2017, Susan Butlin reported to police that Ernie Ross Duggan, also known as Junior, had sexually assaulted her and was harassing and intimidating her.
But police told Butlin there were no grounds to lay criminal charges against Duggan and instructed her to apply for a peace bond.
About a month later, Duggan fatally shot Butlin inside her home. (The Canadian Press)

Police are investigating after a youth was hit by a tractor trailer in Dunstaffnage, east of Charlottetown, this morning.
Police say the youth, over the age of 12, was crossing the road to board a school bus when he was struck by a tractor trailer.
They say it appears the bus was slowing down to make a regular stop in the area when the incident happened.
The youth was taken to hospital with serious injuries and investigators say it does not look like drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident. (The Canadian Press)

Police in Placentia, Newfoundland, are investigating after one person died when a single vehicle crashed on Route 100 on Wednesday night.
Police say a report came in about a single-vehicle crash along the Cape Shore Highway, where the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a power pole, causing extensive damage.
The driver of the vehicle died at the scene and police say the crash caused a fire that was later extinguished.
