Mi’kmaq Art of Porcupine Quillwork

Indigenous Artist-in-Residence Nicole Porter will be at the Sackville Farmers’ Market between 9 AM and 12 PM. This free event will see Nicole demonstrating the Mi’kmaq art of porcupine quillwork; a time-honored, intricate art form utilizing quills and birch bark. For centuries, it has served as a culturally significant craft and a testament to Mi’kmaq artistry.

Nicole will demonstrate and talk about the process of gathering the bark, quills, preparing the material and how to quill onto birch bark. People will also have the opportunity to try their hand at this craft.
