(NB-Local-Taxation)
The New Brunswick government says the province’s overall local government and rural district assessment base for taxation grew by 2.7 per cent compared to last year.
The assessment base for taxation includes the assessed value of homes and other properties within each local government or rural district.
Although eligible properties will have their value for taxation frozen at 2025 levels for the 2026 taxation year, the provincewide assessment base still increased by over 2.5 billion dollars.
The province says the growth resulted from new construction and sales, which were not subject to the freeze.

Party leaders in Newfoundland and Labrador are set to square off in a televised debate this evening.
The province’s tentative energy deal with Quebec will likely be a hot topic.
Liberal leader and incumbent premier John Hogan has centered the draft deal in his campaign, promising to see it through to final agreements and use its promised financial returns to better the province.
Progressive Conservative Leader Tony Wakeham has vowed to have an independent third party review to deal to ensure it guarantees the best possible payout for Newfoundland and Labrador.
The N-D-P is the only party to have released a full costed platform and leader Jim Dinn has challenged his competitors to do the same.

Marineland says it has more than a dozen reasons why none of its remaining 30 belugas should be sent to a proposed whale sanctuary in eastern Nova Scotia.
The shuttered Ontario theme park released a report last week alleging the site in Wine Harbour is polluted and has seen no development since plans for its construction were unveiled in 2020.
Whale Sanctuary Project C-E-O Charles Vinick says a mitigation plan has been approved for old gold mining sites near the sanctuary and water sampling has shown no contamination.
Still, the Whale Sanctuary Project is facing opposition from a small group of local landowners whose unanimous consent is required to allow the project to proceed.

While arresting 34-year-old Rodney Noseworthy, RCMP discovered a warrant for his arrest from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in Conception Bay South, for failure to comply with conditions of a release order.
Police say they are waiting for results of a blood test to see if they will also charge the man with impaired driving.
