(Photo: Theodore Ramharack\/CHMA).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sackville arts centre group plans fundraising and membership drive following public meeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Sackville nonprofit pursuing a dedicated performing arts centre is preparing a membership drive and crowdfunding campaign following a public meeting on October 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sue Rose, president of the Tantramar Arts and Culture Center, said attendance at the October 16 meeting was small, but those who came were eager to help establish a dedicated space for local artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rose, a Sackville theatre artist, says finding suitable venues has become increasingly difficult for local arts organizations. Mount Allison University has historically provided space for performances, but she says that arrangement has changed over the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Over the years, recent years, say in the last 10 years, those spaces have become less and less available to the community, or when they are available, the rent for them may be prohibitive to most organizations,&#8221; Rose told CHMA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/nannn-web.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rose has worked on productions in venues she considered unsuitable for performers and audiences. She said local dance companies also need more room, while musicians have sometimes performed in unconventional locations, including Greenslade&#8217;s, a historic Sackville house where concerts have been held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the survey found<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rose has described a theatre seating roughly 200 people, with retractable seats so the room could be opened up for other uses. Farmers markets, weddings and conventions are among the possibilities she has raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The summer survey presented at the October 16 meeting suggests that a smaller venue would meet the needs of some potential users. Eleven of the 34 respondents selected seating for 75 to 150 people, the most common response. Seven couldn&#8217;t identify one typical audience size, while only two selected the larger range of 150 to 300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venue size and layout were also a concern. Sixteen participants identified those limitations when asked about difficulties hosting events, compared with six who pointed to rental costs. Good acoustics and professional sound and lighting equipment were important considerations, along with keeping the space affordable to rent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty respondents asked to join the nonprofit&#8217;s supporter mailing list, and 26 indicated they would volunteer. The survey involved 34 participants, so its results cannot be taken as representative of everyone in Tantramar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rose hopes the centre could eventually host touring performers and attract audiences from outside Sackville. Organizers have looked at existing buildings without finding one they consider suitable, even after renovations. A new building could be constructed in stages, although the group has not settled on a location or budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Planning the next steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rose and fellow project organizer Ryan Slashinsky began discussing the proposal last December, around the same time other local artists were raising similar concerns. The nonprofit was subsequently established to pursue the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Where we&#8217;re at right now is community building. We&#8217;ve established a nonprofit organization, and we want to bring together these diverse groups so that we can advocate for this space,&#8221; Rose said in an earlier interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the October 16 meeting, Slashinsky presented the survey results. Retired Mount Allison drama department faculty member Paul Del Motte also spoke about the Mulgrave Road Theatre Centre for the Arts in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, where he worked as a consultant and designer. Del Motte was also involved in designing Mount Allison&#8217;s Motyer-Fancy Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kellie Mattatall has agreed to join the nonprofit&#8217;s board. Rose said recruiting volunteers remains difficult because many interested artists already have other commitments, although the group hopes to offer smaller assignments for those unable to serve on committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizers expect to hold another public meeting in about two weeks, this time to discuss what should go inside the centre and how it might be used. Rose said separate committees would take on the work of fundraising, governance, advocacy and community engagement. The group is also preparing a membership drive, while work on a crowdfunding website is underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rose said organizers intend to remain in contact with the Municipality of Tantramar, whose Department of Active Living plans to request funding in 2027 for a feasibility study into a multipurpose facility. Tantramar&#8217;s Recreation Master Plan, approved in September, includes consideration of such a facility. Rose has questioned whether a building designed primarily for recreation would meet the needs of performing arts groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rose&#8217;s interest in the project comes partly from her experience with Marsh Light Theatre, where she worked as a playwright and served on the board.
