(Photo: Theodore Ramharack\/CHMA).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundreds of people gathered outside the New Brunswick Legislature in Fredericton on Tuesday to protest industrial developments across the province, including a gas and diesel power plant planned for Centre Village, a proposed data centre near Saint John and the Sisson mine project. The October 20 demonstration also drew opponents of possible renewed shale gas development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rally was organized in part by the Protect the Chignecto Isthmus Coalition and Seniors for Climate Tantramar. It coincided with the opening of the fall legislative session, when Lieutenant-Governor Louise Imbeault delivered the speech from the throne outlining the Holt government&#8217;s priorities for the coming year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton was among the speakers, accusing the provincial government of pursuing projects despite opposition from communities where they are proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are facing so many crises right now in our province, on our planet, and instead of finding solutions, moving towards the things that we need, like renewable energy, for example, we have a government that is exacerbating these crises,&#8221; Mitton told the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/fred-web.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mitton promised to carry protesters&#8217; concerns into the Legislature, telling them their chants could be heard inside the building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beverly Gingras of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick called for more locally-generated renewable electricity, including solar power from public buildings and homes. She said larger renewable projects could operate alongside smaller community systems, with energy storage helping manage supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have solutions now. We want our government to invest in them,&#8221; Gingras told the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Premier Susan Holt was outside watching the demonstration when Ashley Anthony, a volunteer with Save Lorneville, approached her about the proposed data centre at Spruce Lake Industrial Park. (Photo: Theodore Ramharack\/CHMA).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed Spruce Lake project, involving Beacon New Brunswick and VoltaGrid, includes a 390-megawatt data centre, a 190-megawatt natural gas generating facility and transmission connections intended to supply another 200 megawatts from NB Power&#8217;s grid. The project remains under environmental review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They have to be able to successfully get through an EIA, demonstrate no impact to water, demonstrate no impact to rates, demonstrate positive impact to community,&#8221; Holt said. She added that the proposal had not yet demonstrated it could meet those requirements and said the province was incorporating public feedback into revisions to its draft policy for large data centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthony questioned whether the consultation process had provided adequate opportunities for public participation. Speaking with CHMA afterward, she said she remained dissatisfied with the premier&#8217;s response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I think that Susan has a good heart, but I think that she gives us the same political rigmarole that everybody else is giving us,&#8221; Anthony said. She argued that the government was being prescriptive rather than working with communities to develop policies based on scientific evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation also turned to the Sisson mine, with Holt disputing suggestions that the project was being fast-tracked. She said it was continuing through a lengthy process involving multiple conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sisson mine would be built northwest of Fredericton, where developers want to extract tungsten and molybdenum. The project received environmental approval from New Brunswick in 2015 and from the federal government in 2017. Some conditions remain outstanding. Ottawa referred the project to its Major Projects Office in November 2025 for assistance with financing and regulatory work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tantramar opposition reaches Fredericton<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terry Jones, who lives directly south of the planned Centre Village site, travelled to Fredericton to speak about what the facility could mean for her property. She worries about noise, industrial lighting, increased traffic along Route 940 and possible effects on her well water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I have a very quiet country setting. I like to listen to the animals. (Photo: Theodore Ramharack\/CHMA).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meredith Fisher of Seniors for Climate Tantramar told the rally that opponents of the Centre Village project have written letters and raised questions about its potential effects on the surrounding area. She said they have received little satisfactory explanation from the government and NB Power, particularly about water use, air quality and the risks of locating the facility near the Chignecto Isthmus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have been blindsided, misled, railroaded from day one,&#8221; Fisher told the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Centre Village facility is part of NB Power&#8217;s Renewables Integration and Grid Security project, a proposed 500-megawatt generating station along Route 940. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Energy Minister Ren\u00e9 Legacy said in a written statement to CHMA that the plant is needed to meet growing electricity demand and provide backup power when renewable sources are not producing enough electricity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked about battery storage as an alternative, Legacy pointed to the duration of backup power the project is intended to provide. &#8220;The RIGS project is intended to provide grid security over a 36-to-72 hour period. Battery storage is not a cost-effective solution in this scenario,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project received conditional environmental approval in August. In a written statement to CHMA, the Department of Environment and Local Government said seven of the 45 conditions must be addressed before construction begins. Among the conditions are protections for groundwater, air quality and wildlife. The department also requires ongoing monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indigenous leadership and health concerns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rally began with a welcome from Wolastoq Grand Chief Ron Tremblay. During his remarks, he showed protesters a belt he&#8217;d made, with 11 purple beads representing his grandsons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My treaty to them and my covenant to them is that I&#8217;m gonna protect this land, this earth and water for them and for their future children and for their future, future children,&#8221; Tremblay said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fredericton family physician Dr. Chris Arsenault, co-chair of the New Brunswick chapter of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, said concerns about the health effects of industrial development brought him to the rally rather than his usual day of seeing patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My deepest concern is definitely regarding the consideration for reopening the moratorium on fracking,&#8221; Arsenault told CHMA. He pointed to reports from physicians in British Columbia about health problems in communities near shale gas operations and questioned whether New Brunswick has sufficient public health resources to assess those risks.
