Ticks can carry diseases<\/a> that can harm you, your children, or your pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before going outside, treat your clothing and gear with tick repellent, wear longer pants tucked into your socks, and avoid walking through long grass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After you come inside, make sure to check all of your clothing for ticks. Tumble dry clothes at high heat for 10 minutes to kill any ticks clinging on. Showering within two hours of coming indoors has been proven to reduce your risk of getting Lyme disease (or another tick-borne disease) from a bite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check your whole body for ticks as well, remember that they are very small and can hide easily so check everywhere! Small children will need help checking for ticks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your dog is also susceptible to disease from ticks, and can bring ticks into your home that can infect you as well. Talk to your vet about the best tick prevention product for your dog, and make sure to check them thoroughly when they come inside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you find a tick, remove it with fine-tipped tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin\u2019s surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don\u2019t twist or jerk the tick;<\/strong> this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin. After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Never crush a tick with your fingers.<\/strong> Dispose of a live tick by putting it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag\/container, wrapping it tightly in tape, or flushing it down the toilet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you develop a rash or fever within several weeks of removing a tick, see your doctor. Be sure to tell the doctor about your recent tick bite, when the bite occurred, and where you most likely acquired the tick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
