CHMA called up Arsenault to find out what\u2019s on tap for the experimental art and sound festival based in Moncton, which launches online Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Catherine-Arsenault-REFLUX-May-20-2021.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After cancelling last year\u2019s festival due to uncertainty around the COVID-19 shutdown, Arsenault says the idea this year was to make the festival, \u201cas COVID-proof as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLast year was interesting, because we made the call to cancel pretty much everything early on,\u201d says Arsenault. \u201cI was right about start buying plane tickets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was its own roller coaster,\u201d says Arsenault. \u201cThere was a lot of questioning, like, why are you canceling it? It&#8217;ll be over in two weeks, or whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So for this year, they planned a shut-down proof festival, which means most of it takes place virtually, online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with many things in these pandemic years, there\u2019s been a silver lining. This year\u2019s roster of artists is quite possibly the biggest RE:FLUX has ever offered, says Arsenault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere&#8217;s close to probably 30 participating artists in different kinds of mediums, sound exploration and kind of a mix of visual arts and experimental music,\u201d says Arsenault. \u201cIt\u2019s huge. And it wouldn&#8217;t be possible to do it this way live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RE:FLUX is run by a \u201ctiny team\u201d of Arsenault and her partner, Annie France No\u00ebl. Together, they also run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiY04nhn-DwAhXeF1kFHVMcDJoQFjAAegQIBBAE&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.galeriesansnom.org%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw0vkd0QH0X3XJz7YtWn0oEz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Galerie Sans Nom<\/a> in Moncton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another blessing of the online nature of this year\u2019s festival is that the audience can be anywhere. \u201cThere\u2019s people tuning into our tiny festival from Germany and Portugal, and all over Canada,\u201d says Arsenault. Experimental music and sound art is \u201cstill kind of a niche market\u201d says Arsenault, though less and less so. \u201cThat access and that openness on the web is definitely an advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival consists of recorded performances, an Instagram takeover (by artist Cynthia Naggar), collaborations and interactive online experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harpist Sarah Pag\u00e9, a Montreal-based artist who experiments with pedals and homemade electronics, will perform via pre-recorded concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s also a festival staple: <em>N\u2019importe qui peut jouer de la guitare<\/em>, which translates to \u2018anyone can play the guitar.\u2019 The concept is for more mainstream musicians to explore a soundscape, without music, lyrics or rhythm, says Arsenault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s some projects with interactive aspects including a virtual reality\/3D project which involves downloading an app. \u201cThere&#8217;s the <em>Absent Listener,<\/em>\u201d she says, \u201cwhere you can curate different forest sounds that are recorded in different times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere&#8217;s also an in person component we&#8217;re a little excited about,\u201d says Arsenault. \u201cWe partnered up with the Imago print shop who our neighbours and had the idea to match up printmakers with New Brunswick based singer-songwriters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Print artists take inspiration from a song by a New Brunswick artist, and create a piece of art. The musicians include Sackville local Julie Doiron, as well as Menoncle Jason, Wolf Castle, Allumette , and Paranerd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you&#8217;re in Moncton [at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre], you can see the actual work,\u201d says Arsenault. \u201cSo that&#8217;s a little exciting.\u201d That exhibition starts today, and runs throughout June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year the festival is all free online, says Arsenault. All you need is a device and an internet connection. \u201cAnd bonus if you have headphones, because the sound is better with headphones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re all maybe a little tired of digital content and computers because of COVID,\u201d says Arsenault. \u201cBut RE:FLUX is kind of a place to escape all of that. You can plug in and you can really find some cool surprises.
