Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The floors are a lot shinier, the bathroom is bigger, and there\u2019s now room for a longstanding dream of co-owner Dave Epworth: live music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Epworth didn\u2019t make a big announcement when Mel\u2019s Tearoom re-opened for dine in service last week. Instead, he was hoping that a slow return of customers would allow his new staff time to acclimatize to serving in the newly-renovated landmark Sackville diner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hear Epworth talking about the renovations and his plans on Tantramar Report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Dave-Epworth-July-28-2021.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of the pandemic, Dave and his partner Wendy Epworth took the opportunity to do some renovations at Mel\u2019s. But in an iconic diner with a 75+ year history at its current location, change can be hard. Mel\u2019s stalwarts will be glad to know that the changes don\u2019t appear dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Epworth says the real test was when previous owner Roger Goodwin came into the newly renovated space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe sat in here, and with a puzzled look on his face, and he couldn&#8217;t figure out what was different,\u201d says Epworth. \u201cAnd he was here every day for 40 years. So to me, that&#8217;s a bit of a testament that what we did was was okay. And people are going to accept it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_20210723_135908.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_20210723_135908.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_20210723_135908.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_20210723_135908-300x225.jpg 300w\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Dave Epworth in the new cozy couch area of Mel&#8217;s Tearoom. Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Epworths refinished the diner\u2019s black and white tile floors, restored the natural wood trim on the booths, and replaced the tiny bathrooms with a new, larger restroom. They also relocated one booth to make way for a server station, and removed the left hand side counters to make way for movable tables and chairs. There\u2019s also a cozy fireplace surrounded by couches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea is to make use of the new more flexible space to host live music events. The first such event is on August 8, a songwriter\u2019s circle featuring Kenny James, Alex Madsen and Jason Haywood. It\u2019s a pay-what-you-can event with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festivalbythemarsh.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tickets available through Festival by the Marsh<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re pretty excited to do that,\u201d says Epworth, a musician himself. He notes that Sackville lost a great local music venue in Thunder and Lightning last year, and before that, George\u2019s Roadhouse. \u201cSo we&#8217;re hoping to at least take up part of the torch, as far as venues go,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re pretty excited and hopeful that people are going to be into it and hopefully embrace Mel\u2019s as a music venue going forward,\u201d says Epworth.  The restaurant is also open to hosting private events like parties or weddings, says Epworth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Epworths certainly seem to be opening a new chapter in the history of Mel\u2019s, while keeping the feel and look of the original. Although people tend to resist change, says Epworth, it is necessary. \u201cYou make the changes that you need to, to remain competitive and to do your business,\u201d he says, while also leaving something for \u201cpeople to reminisce about when they come in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMel\u2019s got a lot of people through university,\u201d says Epworth. \u201cAnd they come back in here and everything still feels the same.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The floors are a lot shinier, the bathroom is bigger, and there\u2019s now room for a longstanding dream of co-owner Dave Epworth: live music.
