Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sackville\u2019s spooky season starts in earnest next week, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/performerstheatre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Performers Theatre Company<\/a> debuts its production of <em>The Book of Darkness and Light<\/em>, a trio of ghost stories by UK playwright Adam Robinson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robinson is in town for the production, and while he\u2019s here, he\u2019ll be involved in a couple of events this weekend, in advance of the play opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, Robinson is hosting an all-day ghost story writing workshop to help Sackville\u2019s writers delve into their dark sides. Robinson promises a series of \u201cfun, productive exercises\u201d to kick start the story making process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love leading workshops,\u201d says Robinson. \u201cIt&#8217;s one of the things I enjoy most about my job.\u201d And the workshops are open to anyone who\u2019s up for a full day of ideas and exercises. \u201cThere&#8217;s no hierarchy in my workshops whatsoever,\u201d says Robinson. \u201cSo if you&#8217;ve written 100 novels, you&#8217;re as welcome as somebody who hasn&#8217;t picked up a pencil since school. It&#8217;s really that open.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then on Sunday at 4pm, Robinson will be part of a Q&amp;A style forum, also featuring some cast members from the Sackville production of <em>The Book of Darkness and Light<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The events are being held at the Performers Theatre Company studio at the corner of Queens and Fairfield Roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-astoundingly-unsettling\">\u201cAstoundingly unsettling\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK reviews for <em>The Book of Darkness and Light<\/em> describe the play as \u201castoundingly unsettling\u201d and \u201ccreepy and captivating.\u201d Director Stephen Puddle says he spent a good amount of time making sure the Sackville production was sufficiently scary. He doesn\u2019t recommend it for small children, though there are some 10-year-olds appearing in the play, and Puddle says he knows some 10 and 11-year-olds that are coming. \u201cIf they&#8217;re into that kind of thing,&#8221; says Puddle, &#8220;then I think that&#8217;s okay.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robinson brings up an expression coined by one of his favourite writers, M.R. James: \u201ca pleasing terror\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think ghost stories are a fun,\u201d says Robinson. \u201cThe idea is that, yes, you&#8217;re a bit spooked. And maybe you&#8217;ll sort of jump a couple of times, I don&#8217;t know. But you enjoy yourself. It&#8217;s fun. You&#8217;re having fun while that&#8217;s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robinson is a self-professed ghost story nerd, even <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-ghost-story-book-club\/id1523090926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hosting a podcast on the genre<\/a>. He\u2019s a fan of \u201cthe classic ghost story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf people like the ghost stories of M.R. James, Edith Wharton, E Nesbitt, Charles Dickens, or Susan Hill, things like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Woman in Black<\/span>, then I think they will be really into the show,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robinson has yet to see the play as staged by Puddle, and it will be considerably different than the one-man show he mounted in the UK. \u201cStephen\u2019s ideas that I&#8217;ve heard so far, just make this so exciting for me,\u201d says Robinson. \u201cIt\u2019s always been a one man thing, me and a musician on stage.
