{"id":17689,"date":"2021-10-29T10:44:47","date_gmt":"2021-10-29T13:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=17689"},"modified":"2021-10-29T13:13:41","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T16:13:41","slug":"horizon-announces-all-week-overnight-closures-for-sackville-er-starting-november-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/horizon-announces-all-week-overnight-closures-for-sackville-er-starting-november-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Updated: Horizon announces all-week overnight closures for Sackville ER, starting November 19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Updated with comments from Christa Wheeler-Thorne, Executive Director, Horizon\u2019s The Moncton Hospital\/Sackville Memorial Hospital<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Horizon Health Network announced this morning that effective Friday, November 19, Sackville emergency room hours will be reduced to daytime only, with the ER open 8am to 4pm seven days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Horizon\u2019s announcement says, \u201cemergency care will not be offered during the evening or night, and all patients and clients requiring medical care will need to seek treatment at another hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overnight emergency care has been unavailable in Sackville on weekend nights since June 11, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The further reduction in service is due to a physician and nursing shortage, says Horizon. \u201cThe emergency department at Horizon\u2019s Sackville Memorial Hospital has been faced with staff shortages in the past which has led to frequent coverage issues,\u201d reads the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an emailed statement, Christa Wheeler-Thorne, executive director of the Moncton Hospital and Sackville Memorial Hospital, confirmed that the move was intended to be temporary. \u201cWe want to be clear this change is temporary but is necessary to provide appropriate nursing resources for inpatient services\u2026 This change will also help to resolve the confusion for the public and Ambulance New Brunswick who are affected by last-minute, sporadic closures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sackville ER has had several last minute overnight closures, and even a daytime closure, in addition to the scheduled weekend overnight closures announced in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHorizon acknowledges this change will be difficult for community members,\u201d writes Wheeler-Thorne, \u201cbut we believe it is the best way to provide safe and quality care while providing reliable physician and nursing coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hospital director says the goal remains, \u201cto provide emergency services at Horizon\u2019s Sackville Memorial Hospital 24\/7.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wheeler-Thorne says that Horizon is currently recruiting four RNs and one LPN, and was able to fill one RN position since September 1, 2021.
