Thefts at Gitpu and Woodpecker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gitpu Tobacco and Gas just outside Dorchester was robbed in the early hours of Monday morning. Two people wearing masks and hunting garb broke in to the gas station and convenience store at about 5:15 am and filled bags with items from the store. The store has posted videos <\/a>from security cameras inside and outside the store in hopes of helping to identify the thieves. Anyone with any knowledge of the break in and theft is asked to call the Sackville detachment of the RCMP at at 506-364-5023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woodpecker Tree Care has also reported a theft at their business on Tuesday. A Vermeer wood chipper was stolen. The chipper had a number of customizations and Woodpecker has reached out on social media<\/a> for help in locating the stolen equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RCMP\u2019s daily occurrence reports show two break and enter plus theft incidents at businesses reported on Monday, and another theft plus recovered stolen property on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

House fire displaces couple, sparks fundraiser for support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A fire in a Sackville home on Friday has led to a community fundraising effort to support a couple who will be displaced from their home for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire chief Craig Bowser says the Sackville Fire Department responded to a call to a structure fire on Friday, November 19th at about 10:30am. The residents weren\u2019t home, but the fire department helped to rescue four pets, and the home sustained fire and smoke damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, a family member has started a GoFundMe campaign <\/a>to help get the couple get back on their feet. Organizer Jenna Wry is hoping to raise $5000 for Kandice and Ricky Cann, who she describes as \u201cselfless, kind souls\u201d who \u201cwould literally give to anyone in need.\u201d $2800 has been raised so far, from a variety of community members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wolastoqey won\u2019t participate in Higgs\u2019 systemic racism commission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Wolastoqey Chiefs have declined to participate in the New Brunswick government\u2019s commission into systemic racism in the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commission was announced in March, after the Higgs government refused the call by the chiefs for an independent enquiry into systemic racism in the justice system. That call was precipitated by the deaths of Chantal Moore and Rodney Levi, both killed by police officers on duty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September, the province hired Manju Varma to serve as commissioner of systemic racism, with a budget of $500,000, and a goal of reporting back by September 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
