New Brunswick is expanding testing protocols for COVID-19 by introducing five new symptoms to the list that triggers a testing request. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
New symptoms to watch for include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a new onset of fatigue;<\/li>
a new onset of muscle pain;<\/li>
diarrhea;<\/li>
loss of sense of taste or loss of sense of smell; and<\/li>
in children, purple markings on the fingers or toes.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
These symptoms are in addition to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
fever above 38\u00b0C;<\/li>
a new cough or worsening chronic cough;<\/li>
sore throat;<\/li>
runny nose; and<\/li>
headache.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Anyone experiencing two of any of those symptoms is asked to call 811 and follow instructions. For children, purple markings on the fingers and toes alone are enough to warrant a call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At Tuesday’s briefing on COVID-19, Chief Medical Officer of Health Jennifer Russell said \u201cIt is crucial that we do more testing at this stage, and with a broader range of symptoms… As we continually learn more about the virus, and as symptoms are confirmed, they will be added to our testing protocols.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Premier Blaine Higgs announced that temporary foreign workers would be banned from entering the province. The province published an updated state of emergency order, which now includes the clause: “no temporary foreign worker will be permitted to enter New Brunswick.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This appears to even rule out foreign workers that could self-isolate for 14 days, as is the requirement for all others entering the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Higgs also announced new rules to accommodate the springtime movement of post-secondary students in and out of province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
People will be allowed in the province for up to 24 hours to remove belongings from a students\u2019 residence, but anyone staying longer than 24 hours would fall under the 14-day self- isolation period requirement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
People leaving New Brunswick, however, even if just for a short period of time, are still required to self-isolate for 14 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Brunswick\u2019s Green Party is renewing its call for a Guaranteed Annual Income in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a panel discussion last night on Facebook, Green Party leader David Coon pointed out that the federal government is providing two thousand dollars a month to those who can\u2019t work because of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that establishes a federal minimum income that is far greater than the five hundred and thirty-seven dollars that single welfare recipients in New Brunswick receive each month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coon\u2019s colleague, M-L-A Megan Mitton suggested that governments have an obligation to make sure that workers earn wages they can live on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also called for a crackdown on corporations that seek COVID-19 government bailouts while using offshore tax havens to avoid paying taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She added: “We need to make sure we are taking care of people and that we stop letting tax dodgers off the hook.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mitton, who represents the provincial riding of Memramcook-Tantramar, may have been referring to Irving-owned companies registered in Bermuda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mount Allison Master’s student Jacob Demers has taken first prize in a research student pitch competition hosted by the New Brusnwick Innovation Foundation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Demers receives a $1000 award for his video pitch, outlining his work in studying freshwater wetland systems called impoundments, which are constructed and managed to compensate for the loss of natural wetlands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Demers is hoping to help explain why older impoundments seem to be less popular for birds, and is studying water quality, sediment, and how aquatic insect communities that are food for waterfowl are changing over time. Here’s Demers explaining his research in his award winning video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
