{"id":2289,"date":"2020-05-01T09:00:35","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T12:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=2289"},"modified":"2020-05-01T10:39:21","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T13:39:21","slug":"april-30-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/april-30-news\/","title":{"rendered":"May 1 News"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Brunswick Chief Medical Officer of Health Jennifer Russell told New Brunswickers they may have to embrace a different version of normal at Thursday&#8217;s update on COVID 19.  \u00a0Russell addressed the frustration that some are feeling over the continued restrictions on their lives, in light of New Brunswick\u2019s 12th day with no new cases reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO Russell clip 1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/May-1-Russell-clip-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Russell 14:40 But I get the sense that there are many people out there asking isn&#8217;t this enough?<\/em> <em>After seven weeks in lockdown, and almost two weeks with no new cases, some of you are asking, why does this have to go on? Why can&#8217;t we get our haircut? Why can&#8217;t we go to the mall? And why can&#8217;t we hang out with our friends? When will my elective surgery be rescheduled? When will life return to normal?  15:47:&nbsp; The answer is that life will return to a different version of normal. And we will learn to live with this virus until an effective vaccine or some other treatment is available.&nbsp;  We have we will have more COVID-19 cases we will have more outbreaks. But we are now ready more than ever to tackle such outbreaks and manage this disease.   18:50: other jurisdictions have learned a painful lesson about the cost of rushing back to normalcy and I want us to learn from that experience.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Premier Blaine Higgs announced a two week renewal of the province\u2019s public health order, with all licenses, registration and certificates extended until June 30th.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs also said that schools will not be resuming before summer, but that New Brunwick\u2019s kids could expect to be back in a classroom of some sort by the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO May 1 Higgs clip 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/May-1-Higgs-clip-2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Currently, we plan for schools to resume in September. However, as long as we&#8217;re operating and the colored bands in the recovery plan up to the green phase, the classroom setting will be different from the one we know<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs said classroom adaptations in place in September might include online learning and smaller groups, and that the details are currently being developed by the Department of Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trevor Holder, minister of post secondary education, training and labor, announced job protection for workers affected by COVID-19. Retroactive to March 12, employees affected by the pandemic and its effects can request an unpaid leave without risk of losing their job, losing seniority or being penalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The policy applies to those who are not able to work because they have COVID-19, are caring for a person who has COVID-19, are following self-isolation or quarantine protocols as directed by public health, or are caring for their children due to school or daycare closures.&nbsp; Holder outlined the five categories of workers covered by the job protection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO  Trevor Holder, clip 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/May-1-Holder-Clip-3-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Job protection is available under the following situations one, when an employee&#8217;s under medical investigation, supervision or treatment related to COVID-19 when an employee is acting in accordance with the order of the Public Health Act related to COVID-19 for example, contact tracing by public health could result in an order to stay home for 14 days. Three when an employee is subject to a controlled measure, which may include self isolation As the result of information or directions related to COVID-19 issued by medical health officer of health, a medical practitioner, a nurse practitioner or nurse, telecare, the government in New Brunswick, the Government of Canada or the council of a local government. Four, when there is a risk that an employee may be it may expose other individuals in the workplace to COVID-19. Five, when an employee provides care or support to a family member, due to a matter related to COVID-19, or school or daycare closures, six when an employee is directly affected by travel restrictions related to COVID-19 and therefore cannot reasonably be expected to travel back to New Brunswick.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holder said employees must request this emergency leave in writing to their employers as soon as possible, and the requests must include the reasons for the leave, when it will or did start, and how long it will last.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details are available at the government of New Brunswick website:&nbsp; gnb.ca\/petl<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green Party Leader David Coon has asked for a wage subsidy program to help farmers recruit and retain farm workers in light of COVID 19 requirements and the ban on temporary foreigh workers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coon is also asking for a system that could give exemptions to the order barring temporary foreign workers from entering New Brunswick.&nbsp; Coon said that farmers who can demonstrate they have necessary supports in place to quarantine their workers for 14 days and provide for physical distancing in their accommodations, should be eligible for exemptions from the ban.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs said that the government would be working with employers to try to fill the positions from inside the province, and if there were situations the jobs could not be filled, they would considering making an exemption and bringing in temporary foreigh workers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs pointed to a recently announced federal program for students that he hopes will encourage them to fill the gaps left by temporary foreign workers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs also announced a new virtual job matching to be launched on Monday, called Working NB.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs defended the decision to ban temporary foreign workers, pointing to the situation with meat-packing plants in Alberta, where some of Canada\u2019s biggest outbreaks of COVID-19 have taken place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO Higgs clip 4<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/May-1-Higgs-clip-4.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>So while you know we can we can stop and we can think about it or we can say wow, wish we&#8217;d done something there or we can react and we&#8217;ll we&#8217;ll find a way to mitigate the the the issues on on our businesses around the province, which we can because we recognize that not only can we minimize or eliminate this particular risk We can find a way through it and working with our businesses to make it happen. You know, so when you have a solution on both ends where you can minimize the risk, and you can, and you can mitigate the impact by providing the necessary support and, and labor force with the companies.
