{"id":24067,"date":"2022-05-06T16:59:08","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T19:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=24067"},"modified":"2022-05-06T17:21:48","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T20:21:48","slug":"tenants-advocate-speaks-out-against-rental-discrimination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/tenants-advocate-speaks-out-against-rental-discrimination\/","title":{"rendered":"Tenants&#8217; advocate speaks out against rental discrimination"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Sackville man who is searching for affordable housing says he&#8217;s encountered roadblocks, including landlords who won\u2019t accept him as a tenant because he has children.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But an advocate for the rights of tenants says that\u2019s an example of rental discrimination, which is illegal under provincial human rights legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that it&#8217;s important to make [people aware] that is not legal, this kind of discrimination,\u201d says Jael Duarte,\u00a0a lawyer and tenants\u2019 advocate for New Brunswick, employed by the Saint John-based Human Development Council.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The home rented by Reggie Beal, a father of three, is up for sale, and he\u2019s been trying to find an affordable place to live with his three young children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Reggie.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"839\" height=\"559\" sizes=\"(max-width: 839px) 100vw, 839px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Reggie.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24071\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Reggie.jpg 839w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Reggie-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Reggie-768x512.jpg 768w\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Sackville resident Reggie Beal is pictured in a screenshot. So far, nothing\u2019s worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Basically, we&#8217;ve tried to find places that will accept, first of all, children,&#8221; he says. &#8220;And second of all, we&#8217;re trying to find places that is affordable.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Canada-Info_Reggie_Beal-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That means anywhere from $750 to $900 a month for the grocery store worker. He says the price of housing suitable for his family now tends to range from $1,100 to upwards of $2,500, not including utilities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He&#8217;s a member of the Affordable Housing Initiative, which made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/the-housing-crisis-in-sackville-is-growing-and-needs-action-says-group-to-town-council\/\">presentation<\/a> at Monday&#8217;s public meeting of Sackville town council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more on this story, CHMA spoke to the Fredericton-based tenants\u2019 advocate, asking her how widespread housing discrimination based on family status is in New Brunswick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/DuarteClips.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Sackville man who is searching for affordable housing says he&#8217;s encountered roadblocks, including landlords who won\u2019t accept him as a tenant because he has children.&nbsp;
