{"id":26430,"date":"2022-09-15T14:07:28","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T17:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=26430"},"modified":"2022-09-15T14:08:30","modified_gmt":"2022-09-15T17:08:30","slug":"sackville-emergency-department-closed-again-this-weekend-due-to-doctor-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/sackville-emergency-department-closed-again-this-weekend-due-to-doctor-shortage\/","title":{"rendered":"Sackville emergency department closed again this weekend due to doctor shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sackville Memorial Hospital emergency department is closed temporarily for another weekend, according to an announcement this afternoon from the Horizon Health Network.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Horizon says that due to &#8220;a shortage of physician coverage&#8221;, the Sackville emergency department will close at 4pm on Friday, September 16 and reopen Monday, September 19, 2022, at 8am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All patients requiring emergency medical care will need to be treated at another hospital. The two closest emergency rooms are in Amherst and Moncton.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Horizon says all ambulances will be diverted to other hospitals. Anyone with a medical emergency should still call 911.For non-urgent medical needs, Horizon encourages use of Tele-Care 811, pharmacies, virtual care at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.evisitnb.ca\/\"> eVisitNB.ca<\/a>, and after-hours clinics. More information on these options is available at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sowhywait.ca\/\"> sowhywait.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interim Horizon CEO Margaret Melanson recently re-affirmed the health network&#8217;s committment to return to 24\/7 service at the Sackville hospital emergency department.\u00a0 Melanson made the committment in a meeting with Sackville Mayor Shawn Mesheau and other local mayors in August, according to Mesheau\u2019s monthly report to council.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting also included Suzanne Johnston, the new trustee appointed by the Higgs government to replace Horizon\u2019s partially elected board of directors. Johnston will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legnb.ca\/en\/webcasts\/785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interviewed by MLAs today starting at 2pm at the provincial legislature&#8217;s public accounts committee<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mesheau reported to council that nurse practitioners are now working alongside doctors in the Sackville emergency department to help cover primary care related needs. Mesheau also met with Horizon&#8217;s medical director Dr. Jody Enright to discuss physician recruitment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 554px) 100vw, 554px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-15-at-1.55.59-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26432\" width=\"347\" height=\"202\"\/><figcaption>Image: Facebook screencap, Sep 15, 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her report to council this month, special projects manager Kieran Miller said that the Town of Sackville and Mount Allison will be a co-sponsoring the 2022 Dalhousie Family Medicine Education weekend in Saint Andrews later in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller also said the marketing campaign organized collaboratively with Horizon and the Rural Health Action Group has started a We Want You! campaign which is visible on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mesheau&#8217;s report to council also says that several acute care beds are expected to be opening in the Brunswick Unit of the Sackville hospital in October.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All acute care beds had been temporarily transformed to pre-long term care in December 2021, at the same time that emergency service hours were cut by two thirds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sackville Memorial Hospital emergency department is closed temporarily for another weekend, according to an announcement this afternoon from the Horizon Health Network.&nbsp;&nbsp;
