Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 60 Mount A students and others marched to the University\u2019s administrative building on Friday September 23 to demand the school divest its endowments from fossil fuel companies, and to take a leadership role to address the climate crisis.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHMA stopped by to listen in on the protest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/CHMA-Sep-26-Divest-Climate-protest.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizer Kate DesRoches told the crowd that Divest MTA has been asking the university to de-fossilize its endowment fund since 2013.  &#8220;It would have been quite radical for Mount A to have divested when we first started asking them,&#8221; said DesRoches, &#8220;but now it&#8217;s not even close to that anymore.&#8221;  DesRoches cited a number of schools such as Harvard, UBC and Lakehead University, which have gone through with divestment.  &#8220;This is not even an opportunity to be a climate leader,&#8221; said DesRoches. &#8220;Now this is an opportunity for a meager attempt to catch up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_0828.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26579\" width=\"627\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_0828.png 1280w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/IMG_0828-768x576.png 768w\" \/><figcaption>Students held signs calling out the university&#8217;s connection to the fossil fuel industry via its endowment investments. Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student Chloe Robichaud took the opportunity to speak to her fellow protesters:  &#8220;I&#8217;m over here going to university and actively investing in my future.
