Screengrab: twitter.com\/bonnieswift10<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When local residents and journalists raised questions about her stated views this week, hundreds of tweets suddenly vanished.&nbsp;The first-time politician had previously campaigned on transparency in local government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swift says her tweets are being taken out of context, and that her husband deactivated the account without her knowledge because of online harassment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reached by phone on Wednesday, Swift told CHMA she &#8220;could care less&#8221; if residents decided not to vote for her over the deleted tweets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not desperate to win this race&#8230; I&#8217;d be happy just leaving it, not talking to anybody,\u201d she said.&nbsp;She added that she stands by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BonnieSwiftForMayor\/posts\/pfbid0vX8khiirXC2BLq6bmQuW9rsJBGbQ5QG6XjMdWsRv9KBpS9tG16J1dLor8j2gJbLBl\">statement<\/a> issued to local reporter Bruce Wark, who <a href=\"https:\/\/warktimes.com\/2022\/11\/22\/tantramar-mayoralty-candidate-bonnie-swift-deletes-hundreds-of-right-wing-tweets\/\">first reported<\/a> about the missing tweets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHMA collected screengrabs of her Twitter feed before they disappeared. Some of her controversial takes included commentary on reproductive rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When one media organization reported that the U.S. Supreme Court was set to overturn Roe. v Wade, striking down abortion rights, she responded: \u2018LOL.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another tweet she said: \u201cIf abortions [are] illegal it does not impact me in anyway\u2026. I just don\u2019t care\u2026. It\u2019s not the 1950s use birth control, tons of options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"526\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SwiftsScreengrab_CBC_HealthCare.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27675\"\/><figcaption><em>Mayoral candidate Bonnie Swift commenting on health-care and &#8216;defunding the CBC&#8217; on Twitter. Screengrab: twitter.com\/bonnieswift10<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another tweet, Swift stated that she supports calls from Tory leader Pierre Poilievre for the federal government to &#8220;defund the CBC.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a talking point commonly found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wearecanproud\/status\/1522344441901731840\">far-right Canadian tweetosphere<\/a> through websites and social media outfits like Canada Proud and Rebel News. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders&#8217; calls for publicly-funded health care in the United States, Swift stated: &#8220;You can have Canada&#8217;s socialist health care system it&#8217;s useless. Had to go to the US for care due to wait times here.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an exchange with another Twitter user, Swift, a self-described millionaire, said increased health-care privatization &#8220;can&#8217;t happen soon enough.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SwiftsScreengrab_HealthCare.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27679\" width=\"406\" height=\"572\"\/><figcaption><em>Mayoral candidate Bonnie Swift commenting on health-care privatization on Twitter. Screengrab: twitter.com\/bonnieswift10<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She frequently weighed in on political debates south of the border, often trolling liberal or left-leaning politicians and pushing back against criticism of wealth inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the purchase of Twitter by billionaire Elon Musk and called for a &#8220;wealth tax and strong rules to hold Big Tech accountable,&#8221; Swift replied: &#8220;We need you to shut up&#8230; that&#8217;s what we need.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Themes in the tweets reviewed by CHMA included her enthusiastic support for Elon Musk \u2014 often saying he should &#8220;buy Canada&#8221; \u2014 matched by an intense loathing of Justin Trudeau. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anti-racist movements and organizations such as Black Lives Matter and Antifa were also frequent targets of Swift, who spoke out in defence of &#8220;white, wealthy men.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She made that comment in response to Laurie Penny, a journalist reflecting on the experiences of writers &#8220;who aren&#8217;t straight, white, wealthy men.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Penny said she had spent &#8220;her whole career being trolled, threatened, flamed, defamed, iced out and lied about.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swift responded: &#8220;I really think most people don&#8217;t care what you have to say&#8230;. At least the white, wealthy men are creating technologies that are advancing society. Screengrab: twitter.com\/bonnieswift10<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swift, in her statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/warktimes.com\/2022\/11\/22\/tantramar-mayoralty-candidate-bonnie-swift-deletes-hundreds-of-right-wing-tweets\/\">warktimes.com<\/a>, said the tweets weren\u2019t an accurate reflection of her views: \u201cI have just as many left sided views as right,\u201d she said, \u201cbut none of those were ever posted. I have to question why I am singled out to be investigated in the campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leadership of the Town of Sackville has been criticized by Swift, among others, for a lack of transparency on issues such as allegations of bullying in the Sackville Fire Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But so far no controversies have emerged over the social media activity of her opponents \u2014 Sackville mayor Shawn Mesheau and deputy mayor Andrew Black \u2014  at least not during the current municipal election campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHMA reached out to the two other candidates by email. Black didn\u2019t respond, while Mesheau provided an emailed statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have read the Warktimes blog and was disheartened by its contents,&#8221; he said. &#8220;My views have always been to embrace our diversities as people and I do not support negative campaigning.
