Photo: David Gordon Koch<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The planned abolition of French immersion in New Brunswick has provoked the wrath of some local residents, and a grassroots organization appears to be taking shape in Sackville to oppose the change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About two dozen people turned out for a public meeting Tuesday evening at the Sackville Commons Co-op.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valmai Goggin, the parent of two young girls, lived away from New Brunswick for 15 years. Access to French immersion was among the factors attracting them back to the province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;To be in a position now where the only bilingual province in the country is looking at having the worst French program nationwide, is mind-boggling and it cannot happen,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Listen to local residents who turned out for the meeting <strong><em>on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022, in Sackville: <\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/French-Immersion-Supporters-in-Sackville.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The event featured two guest speakers: Memramcook-Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton and Chris Collins, executive director of Canadian Parents for French NB.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins, who was formerly a Liberal Party MLA who served as Minister of Local Government, encouraged parents to oppose the changes through a letter-writing campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignleft is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">People in Sackville NB are not taking the abolition of French Immersion laying down. 30 parents at the commons on Lorne street. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LSqr8CBihX\">pic.twitter.com\/LSqr8CBihX<\/a><\/p>&mdash; he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pilot program at Maplehurst Middle School in Moncton could replace French Immersion, according to CPF NB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a media release, the groups said it has had \u201cnumerous conversations with ten Maplehurst families, students, and former educators about the curriculum that is being offered by Maplehurst School in-lieu of French Immersion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins said the program is significantly worse than what&#8217;s currently on offer in French immersion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe province cannot expect these offerings to produce fully bilingual students, as they are far from reaching the core elements of an effective immersion program,\u201d he said in a statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitton told the crowd that community organizing would be required to reverse the government\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think that people organizing, making themselves heard, speaking up to government, speaking publicly, is the only thing that&#8217;s going to help move the needle,&#8221; Photo: David Gordon Koch <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But many questions remain about what exactly will replace the French immersion system, which some parents say is a crucial aspect of the education system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics of the government also point to the Premier\u2019s push for a unilingual province dating back to the 1980s, when he ran for the leadership of the anti-bilingual Confederation of Regions Party. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also presented an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/572013501\/HIGGS-Blaine-Bilinguisme-Commission-Guerette-1985#fullscreen&amp;from_embed\">11-page brief<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca\/en\/article\/official-language-act-new-brunswick\">Gu\u00e9rette-Smith Commission on Official Languages<\/a> in 1985, calling for official unilingualism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Correction: The name of an attendee was misspelled in an earlier version of this article.
