The march ended downtown at the Amherst Police Station, where organizers, as well as Amherst Chief of Police Dwayne Pike, spoke.

On Friday, upwards of 1000 people marched in Moncton, more than twice as many as an earlier march last Monday.

And last Wednesday, about 300 people gathered in Sackville to show their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Stay tuned to the CHMA daily news for an interview with [Nell-iss Kal-go-ra] Nellys Kalgora, the 18-year-old organizer of the region’s first protest on Monday in Moncton.

The Sackville Fire Department will likely have a new state-of-the-art training facility by the end of this year.

At its meeting tonight, Sackville Town Council is expected to approve spending more than sixteen thousand dollars to purchase four large shipping containers that will be used for fire training.

The forty-foot, metal containers will be set up behind the town’s public works building in the Sackville Industrial Park.

Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Phinney says they will be used to create conditions that firefighters actually encounter when they fight house fires:

CLIP OPENS: “I THINK IT’S GOING TO UP THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE TRAINING…

CLIP ENDS: “…SO I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE A HUGE BENEFIT FOR OUR MEMBERS.”

Deputy Chief Phinney says two concrete pads will be built on the training site so that firefighters can practise rescuing people trapped after car crashes.

He says a fake roof will be built that will allow firefighters to practise techniques for punching holes to release gases and smoke from inside burning buildings.

Sackville’s new training facility will be made available to other fire departments including ones in Amherst, Port Elgin and Dorchester.

Town councillors will be asked to approve more than the new fire training facility at tonight’s online meeting at 7pm.

The biggest ticket item up for approval is a replacement hydraulic wheel excavator and a new excavator mulcher, which will cost the town just over $387,000.

Councillors will also be asked to approve about $45,000 to complete improvements on the last two small sections of the old boardwalks and bridges in the Waterfowl Park.

Another $42,000 is needed to replace bunker gear and purchase protective coveralls for the Sackville Fire Department.

Just under $9,000 is needed for the materials to convert the tennis court in Bill Johnstone Memorial Park to four permanent pickle ball courts. A team of volunteers will be doing the installation.

And finally, councillors will be asked to approve a $9,700 contribution towards a new hospice in Moncton that will care for the dying in southeastern New Brunswick.

Sackville is the only municipality in the region that hasn’t made a financial commitment to the hospice.

In a discussion meeting last Monday, Mayor Higham explained that the Sackville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary had originally asked council not to contribute because there were plans to invest in palliative care here.

Mayor Higham said that recently the town learned the Auxiliary decided not to go ahead with its plans.

Councillors Shawn Mesheau and Joyce O’Neil both raised some questions about the project being built outside of Sackville.

The Tantramar Hospice Palliative Care Organization supports the Moncton project.

The hospice is expected to be completed this fall.

It will have 10 beds, and serve 120 palliative-care patients per year.

———

The Chiefs of the WOOL-ah-sto-gway [Wolastoqey] Nation in New Brunswick have issued a statement in response to the shooting of Chantel Moore on Thursday.

The Chiefs expressed condolences and sympathy to Moore’s family and then called on the provincial government to set up a Committee to review the justice system in New Brunswick.

The Chiefs pointed to the recent acquittal of the man who hit and killed Brady Francis, as further evidence of the violence and unequal legal treatment faced by Indigenous people in the province.

The Chiefs asked that a justice system review committee make recommendations on how the Province can affect change to allow for a system free of systemic discrimination.

Friends and fans of musician Beverly Glenn-Copeland have stepped up to help the artist and his partner Elizabeth through tough financial times brought on by the COVID-19 shutdown.

A Go Fund Me campaign set up to benefit the couple has raised over $86,000 since its launch a week ago.

Beverly and Elizabeth Glenn-Copeland had sold their Sackville home shortly before the pandemic struck, with plans to move closer to family in Ontario.

Glenn-Copeland had tours scheduled this year for Australia, the U.K. and Europe, which have all been postponed to at least 2021, leaving the couple without income for at least a year, and no way to finance a new home.

The fundraiser aimed to help the Glenn-Copelands recover this loss, and cover their essentials until touring becomes possible again.

The campaign far surpassed its original goal of $40,000.

And last but not least on today’s CHMA daily news, Erica Butler speaks with Nell-iss [Nellys] Kalgora, the organizer of the region’s first protest last Monday in Moncton.

Nell-iss [Nellys] Kalgora is a senior at the francophone Odyssey high school in Moncton.

The march she planned drew about 350 people to the streets to protest racial injustice.

Erica Butler called up Nell-iss [Nellys] to find out more about the marches, racism in Moncton, and what made her decide to get involved.

AUDIO Clip Nellys
