{"id":3057,"date":"2020-06-16T08:31:42","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T11:31:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=3057"},"modified":"2020-06-16T08:31:53","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T11:31:53","slug":"news-script-june-16-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/news-script-june-16-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"News script June 16 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On today\u2019s CHMA daily news:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Brunswick ministers to meet First Nations Chiefs<br>Locking down the Campbellton Hospital,<br>and a conversation about media concentration in light of a Green party motion to end it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The province has reported three more people have tested positive with COVID-19 in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One person in their 20\u2019s is a health care worker at the Campbellton Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two others are in their 20\u2019s and 30\u2019s, in the Moncton and Southeast region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Medical Officer of Health Jennifer Russell says the two people who have tested positive in the southeast region are temporary foreign workers who have been in isolation since arriving in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two were tested after isolating for 10 days, and will continue to isolate until they have tested negative twice within a seven day period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russell says the protocol, which requires people coming into the province to self-isolate for 14 days, is working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-16-Russell-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>These individuals have had minimal contact with others since arriving in New Brunswick, and the protocols we put in place to protect their health and that of all new brunswickers appear to be working. And again, we will continue to use the same protocols and procedures each and every time<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Premier Blaine Higgs, who delayed permitting temporary foreign workers in the province for weeks while he pushed for New Brunswick workers to fill their positions, also acknowledges that public health protocols are working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs began his Monday press conference acknowledging the Friday night shooting and death of Rodney Levi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO HIGGS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-16-Higgs-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>To begin today by expressing my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of Rodney Levi, and to all members of the Metapod Naga first nation as a province, we are still mourning the death of Chantel more in Amazon earlier this month.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs and other provincial ministers will be meeting with First Nation chiefs tomorrow. Higgs says it will be an opportunity to hear the Chiefs concerns and have open discussions about how to address them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higgs also says he has not ruled out a public inquiry into systemic racism in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New Brunswick government will not be proceeding with a controversial bill that would expand the powers of the provincial government under a state of emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNB law professor Nicole O&#8217;Byrne called the bill \u201ca dramatic overreach by the executive to infringe or override the powers of the legislative assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill included expanded powers for police to stop any person and demand identification during a state of emergency, without giving any reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Random police checks have been shown to be disproportionately used with Black, Indigenous, or people of colour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Premier Blaine Higgs says after hearing concerns from the public and from the opposition party surrounding the bill, his government has decided not to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Telegraph Journal\u2019s Andrew Waugh asked the premier if the events of Friday night \u2014 meaning the killing of Rodney Levi by RCMP \u2014 had changed his mind about the controversial bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO HIGGS 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-16-Higgs-2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Yes, Andrew, I think Friday night changed things for a lot of people, and including myself. We certainly have to recognize the challenges we&#8217;re having here in the in our province, the systematic racism that seems to be part of our society than it has been for generations. We have to recognize that Bill 49, although being certainly a with all good intentions was only to ensure that people understood the people there regarding our borders, had the appropriate authority in order to continue that as we deal with COVID-19. It was certainly related to COVID-19. But but in relation to what&#8217;s happening in our province, across the country, certainly in our neighboring country in the US. I think it&#8217;s important now to follow Focus on the the healing process and certainly what needs to take place in order to ensure that, that we can identify some of the chronic concerns maybe that have lasted for generations that have not been effectively dealt with. And to that end, I feel that there are priorities that we can collectively put together with the Chiefs focusing on New Brunswick and Irish who&#8217;s here right at home and make some meaningful progress.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of the country&#8217;s largest Indigenous organization said Monday the only way to overcome racism in Canada&#8217;s policing agencies is to impose systemic change and a zero-tolerance policy aimed at eliminating the excessive use of force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perry Bellegarde, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, spoke with journalists via conference call to express his outrage following a series of violent, and in some cases fatal, encounters between police and Indigenous people across Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Police are there to protect and serve, not assault and kill,&#8221; he said from Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nova Scotia, officials reported no new cases of COVID-19 again today. The last new case was reported on June 9th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three active cases in Nova Scotia, with two people in hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of today, Nova Scotia will permit outdoor visits in long term care homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Campbellton Regional Hospital has been effectively closed until further notice, as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are currently eight hospital employees with COVID-19 in isolation at home, and another 27 employees in isolation as a precaution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vitalit\u00e9 Health Network, which oversees the Campbellton Regional Hospital, says visits are now prohibited.
