{"id":3100,"date":"2020-06-19T08:36:20","date_gmt":"2020-06-19T11:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=3100"},"modified":"2020-06-19T09:38:51","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T12:38:51","slug":"news-script-june-19-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/news-script-june-19-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"News script June 19 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On today\u2019s CHMA daily news:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Backwoods dumping in Sackville<br>Bursting the bubble in Nova Scotia<br>and a special town council meeting called for Monday<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The province reported no new cases of COVID-19 yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two more people have recovered, leaving 27 active cases in New Brunswick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people are in hospital, one in intensive care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nova Scotia, officials reported their ninth day with no new cases of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The province has only two active cases, both in hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014\u2014-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nova Scotians celebrated yesterday as Premier Stephen McNeil announced a significant easing of restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Effective today, we are bursting the bubble<\/em>,&#8221; McNeil said at a press conference yesterday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nova Scotians are now permitted to gather in groups of up to 10 without physical distancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new rules are similar to New Brunswick\u2019s current phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McNeil had a dramatic change of tone when he spoke about further opening and loosening of travel restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said not only was an Atlantic bubble imminent, but that easing of restrictions with the rest of Canada could happen by mid July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, PEI Premier Dennis King had been the only Atlantic premier to express confidence that we would soon see an Atlantic bubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs says he will announce progress on the bubble this morning at a 10am news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That news out of Nova Scotia will no doubt be music to the ears of mayors John Higham and David Kogon, from Sackville and Amherst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mayors met Tuesday in person at the closed border between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, to talk about and highlight the importance of an Atlantic bubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mayor Higham says the border restrictions have really brought to light just how connected communities across the border are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A surprising number of entrepreneurs cross the border to do business, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the ties go deeper than business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO CLIP Higham<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-19-Higham.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The biggest concerns I&#8217;ve heard are family based You know,<br>there&#8217;s a lot of parts of our families that are on the other side of the border and you haven&#8217;t been able to see them for some time.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higham says that as a small town mayor, he doesn\u2019t have access to the premier\u2019s office, but has been sending his questions and answers to MLA Megan Mitton, who he says is actively lobbying in Fredericton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higham also says he\u2019s taking the lead from health professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO Higham 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-19-Higham-2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I have gone back to the MLA and describe what we were at and had a few interviews to describe that our view is that we&#8217;re not demanding any conditions about this or any timing. From my view, what we want to know is keep it on the front burner, make sure that we understand that there&#8217;s lots of implications for this. And when you&#8217;re ready to go to a bubble from the health perspective, we need to know what those rules are going to be so that we can continue to respect those that was met. Those health outlines which we&#8217;ve done so well, so far, you know, the flattening the curve. And that&#8217;s what gives us the opportunity to look at larger bubbles. So we&#8217;re not the people that will make that choice that&#8217;ll be coming from the health professionals. We just don&#8217;t want it to get lost in other other border itself in other potential issues that they might have to face<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sackville Mayor John Higham and the rest of town council will no doubt be discussing the prospects for an Atlantic bubble on Monday night, when they convene for a special meeting of town council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higham says the special meeting will be focussed on dealing with the pandemic shutdown, and providing some public transparency on what;s being done and what\u2019s planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO Higham 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-19-Higham-3.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>this is all about where the town is at in terms of the<br>recovery phase of COVID. What are we doing? Why are we doing it? What are we What&#8217;s our budget situation? What are we looking at in terms of assisting with business recovery? It&#8217;s it&#8217;s all about what decisions we have made but decisions we&#8217;re at where we go from here.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount Allison University President Jean-Paul Boudreau is expected to present on the university\u2019s operational plan for the fall, and efforts with recruiting and retention of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higham says the town is working closely with Mount Allison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO CLIP Higham 4<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-19-Higham-4.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>we&#8217;ve tried to coordinate our efforts in terms of COVID preparation so that both the community and the campus<br>will be fairly comfortable with the level of risk of the students returning and the school starting to, to thrive again.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Town council will meet online for a virtual meeting Monday at 6:30pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find a link to a livestream of the meeting on the town\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Sackville man is raising concerns over garbage dumping in the woods on his property near Lower Fairfield Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keith Carter says there are trails through his land used by people hiking, riding bikes, and driving ATVs. But they\u2019re not the people dumping, says Carter. Rather, it\u2019s people driving in truck loads of large items that they can\u2019t get rid of without making a trip to Moncton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carter says he\u2019d like to see the town have a place for larger items to be dropped off, so that people won\u2019t feel the need to dump them in the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO Carter:<br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-19-Carter-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>if you&#8217;ve got an old old bed mattress and stuff like that, what do you do with it after the pickup day? You know, do a startup back to your house for another six months? Well, you know, like I can see saying, you know, there&#8217;s a place here to put it, there&#8217;s a church to do this, but that&#8217;s, you know, this is the least it would make a spot that that people could drop stuff off<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past Carter has returned dumped garbage to the owners if he can find a name anywhere in what\u2019s been dumped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO CARTER 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-19-Carter-2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><em>we used to have a lot of trouble in there until I hold it away here a few years ago and took it back to their lawns and then they didn&#8217;t like that. It wasn&#8217;t much fun to have it all come back. So that was better than calling the cops or doing anything you know, that&#8217;s that&#8217;s how we hear the problem for a while now. It&#8217;s starting to get again, they&#8217;re starting to dump again, like, I suppose those fellas are forgotten about it and the newer the younger people don&#8217;t understand. So they got a whole bunch of junk in their truck so they drive in there and throw it out.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time around, Carter found no names. So now he\u2019s considering putting a chain across the access to his property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carter says he doesn\u2019t want to limit access to ATV drivers, but he may have no choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUDIO CARTER 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/June-19-Carter-3.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cthat&#8217;s why people have gates up on their properties. Just for that reason. People won&#8217;t go and take it to a dump site near the town. Had a place that they could take it to. They&#8217;d a lot sooner hollered into down then way back in the woods.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014\u2014\u2014<br>A 34-year-old man from Dieppe was stopped near the Quebec border with over 500 cartons of illegal cigarettes in his truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Saint-Leonard RCMP says the vehicle was stopped at a random check-stop when policed noticed the contraband tobacco inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police say the investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man will appear in court in the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proposed legislation to strengthen mandatory-vaccination rules for schoolchildren in New Brunswick has been defeated in the provincial legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education Minister Dominic Cardy&#8217;s bill, to eliminate religious and philosophical exemptions from the requirement for vaccinations, was defeated 22-20 in a free vote among all four parties in the legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two largest parties split on the issue, with six Progressive Conservative MLAs and 12 Liberals voting against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three People&#8217;s Alliance MLAs all voted no, while the three Green MLAs abstained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States is celebrating a major moment in its human rights history today: Juneteenth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A portmanteau of \u201cJune\u201d and \u201cnineteenth,\u201d Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that they were free from the institution of slavery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sadly, this took place years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation which put an official end to legalized slavery in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ongoing civil war delayed true emancipation for many Black Americans until more than two years after the proclamation was signed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juneteenth is still not taught in most US schools, nor is the event a federal holiday despite decades of pushing from activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year may be different.
