For much of the day it appeared to be a pale, pinkish colour. CHMA called up Jim Prime, an Environment Canada meteorologist based in Fredericton to find out what was going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s actually forest fire smoke,\u201d says Prime, \u201cwhich is just elevated in the atmosphere.\u201d The uniform haze making the sun appear so different is \u201cjust a brief period of really concentrated smoke which is passing over us as it&#8217;s moving to the south,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime says the smoke is coming from fires in northern and western Canada, which is going high up in the atmosphere and being concentrated by various weather patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1242px) 100vw, 1242px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/384266565_10168164166255054_8849097032160350991_n.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37551\" style=\"width:506px;height:521px\" width=\"506\" height=\"521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/384266565_10168164166255054_8849097032160350991_n.jpeg 1242w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/384266565_10168164166255054_8849097032160350991_n-768x791.jpeg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Ashley Patterson, in Middleton, NB around 1pm on Wednesday. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt can travel really great distances,\u201d says Prime about the high level smoke. And because it\u2019s so high, there\u2019s not a lot of negative impact at ground level, expect a slight drop in temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re very lucky because it is higher up,\u201d says Prime. \u201cLooking at all of our air quality sensors, we&#8217;re not picking up any readings at the surface. And with this high pressure system, things are not really turbulent, so we don&#8217;t get a lot of mixing down to the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReally the main impacts from it are that we can see interesting colours sometimes in the morning or in the evening, somewhat similar to when you get a sunset or a sunrise,\u201d says Prime. But this time, the smoke is dense enough to be a bit on the greyish side. There\u2019s also a drop in temperature of a few degrees.<br>\u201cWe were thinking temperatures were going to be a little bit warmer than yesterday because we&#8217;re starting to get on the western side of the high pressure system. But this smoke can sometimes reduce your surface temperatures by two or three degrees. So some areas are going to be a little colder than we were expecting initially, if the smoke wasn&#8217;t going to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime says the smoke should be cleared by Thursday, and temperatures, and the look of the sun, returned to normal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you glanced up in the sky on Wednesday you may have noticed the odd appearance of the sun.
