A marine scientist who studied Newfoundland cod for decades says he remains skeptical of the species’ new designation that permits some fishing of the stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
D-F-O has listed the stock as being in the “cautious zone,” and is allowing a total catch of 18-thousand tonnes for the 2024 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
George Rose says the cod stocks haven’t grown significantly since 2015-16, but the federal government has changed “the goalposts by which the stock is judged.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says the new modelling “rewrites decades of research about the stock.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 36-year-old teacher from a high school in central Nova Scotia is scheduled to face sexual offence charges in Truro provincial court in early September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say they were advised this week of inappropriate contact by a teacher of a student at Tatamagouche Regional Academy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The R-C-M-P say they have charged 36-year-old Nicole MacLeod of Murray Siding with sexual assault, sexual interference, sexual exploitation, luring a child, invitation to sexual touching and making sexually explicit material available to a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigators allege that between May and June of this year, the teacher had sexually assaulted a student on multiple occasions, and sent explicit photos to that student and at least one other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police say a firearms complaint that caused an emergency alert in Nova Scotia turned out to be a gardening tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They say they received multiple calls about a man with a firearm in the 3000-block of Barss Corner Road in Parkdale around 7:30 a-m yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say an emergency alert was issued in the “interest of public safety,” and the 48-year-old man was soon arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, after investigation and a search of the man’s property, officers determined that no firearm was involved, and the man had been holding a large gardening tool, which from a distance, could have been mistaken for a firearm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

R-C-M-P in Nova Scotia have charged a man in the 2022 homicide of a 64-year-old man from Digby County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say this week they arrested 33-year-old Tyler Colbert Langford from Weymouth and charged him with second degree murder following a 28-month investigation into the death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vernon Doucet was found severely injured following a home invasion in the small village of Concession and died in hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say they expect in the coming days to release details about a second person charged in relation to the death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 36-thousand Nova Scotians who receive income assistance will soon see a small payment increase in their next cheque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 2.5 per cent increase announced in March is now in effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The increase applies to the standard household rate starting July 1st, and disability support program participants who receive the standard household rate will also get the increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starting January 1st, 2025, all income assistance streams will be indexed annually based on the consumer price index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Halifax international airport is expecting to have a major renovation completed by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The federal government announced yesterday it will help fund changes to the section of the Halifax airport where international travelers transfer to Canadian flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sean Fraser, a Nova Scotia M-P and minister of housing and infrastructure, announced today that Ottawa would provide up to 8.3 million dollars towards the 18-million dollar upgrade to the international connections facility at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project will add a floor that allows international passengers to make their connections to domestic destinations without having to first pass through customs and collect their baggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
