Some Nova Scotia doctors say a new rule requiring them to make referrals for medical assistance in dying push physicians to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three doctors told a news conference yesterday the wording of the rule crosses a line by requiring that physicians give an “effective” referral to another doctor willing to administer the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They warned the policy passed in May by the Nova Scotia College of Physicians and Surgeons could worsen the province’s shortage of family doctors if the regulator censures those who refuse to obey it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Christian Medical and Dental Association of Canada says 41 physicians in the province have signed a letter stating they’re unwilling to follow the policy, potentially putting them at risk of discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newfoundland and Labrador’s premier is taking aim at Ottawa after it announced last week the end of a 32-year-old moratorium on the commercial northern cod fishery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Andrew Furey has told the federal fisheries minister that allowing foreign vessels a portion of the newly revived commercial fishery is “an affront” to his province’s fishers and processors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says they should have been consulted, adding that it’s time for his province to have a direct say over its resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NB-Residential-Fire)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P in New Brunswick are investigating a residential fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officers responded to the fire last week at a home on Oak Haven Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They say no one was inside and the residence was being renovated at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s still unclear what caused the blaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who fled wildfires near Churchill Falls last month can finally go home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials lifted the evacuation order for the town last night, two weeks — almost to the hour — after it was issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fire closest to Churchill Falls is now listed as being held, meaning it’s no longer spreading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials say it will likely be under control in the coming days, but until then, residents should be prepared for things to change quickly, as a precaution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An agreement between the Government of Canada and Prince Edward Island’s Mi’kmaq First Nations will help turn a chain of islands with sacred cultural significance into a national park reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lennox Island First Nation Chief Darlene Bernard says she’s thrilled about the agreement that will ensure the protection of the lands off P-E-I’s northwest coast called Pituamkek (bee-DOO-um-gek).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bernard says the land is of particular importance because it is home to a historic Mi’kmaq burial ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says the string of islands with white-sand beaches known as Hog Island Sandhills form one of the most ecologically significant coastal dune ecosystems in eastern Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services says 151 cases of whooping cough have been reported in the eastern urban and rural health zones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The health authority says over half of these cases are among children between the ages of 10 and 14, though the 151 reported cases are among people between the ages of one month and 89 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials are encouraging people to keep up on their vaccinations and take precautions to protect those who are vulnerable to serious illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those most vulnerable include infants and people who are in their third trimester of pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The P-E-I government is developing a plan to reduce food waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Agriculture Minister Bloyce Thompson issued a statement yesterday saying the plan is needed to help the Island deal with issues surrounding food insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first phase of planning will include public consultations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government is seeking input through an online survey, which will remain open until August 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
