A new report by New Brunswick’s Health Department says there were 72 opioid deaths last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It says all but one were accidental or “pending intent” deaths, meaning the province is still investigating the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The majority were related to fentanyl or fentanyl analogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In comparison, the department says New Brunswick recorded 77 opioid deaths in 2022, 68 of which were accidental or whose cause is under investigation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Mi’kmaq-Fishers-Dumped)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The federal fisheries minister says a review into how D-F-O officers arrested and dropped two Mi’kmaq (MIG’-maw) fishers at a Nova Scotia gas station without shoes or phones will be made public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diane Lebouthillier has now launched an external review into the officers’ conduct, as well as the department’s policies and practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two Indigenous men say they had to walk for about six hours before they could get help after they were arrested near Shelburne in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some non-Indigenous, commercial elver fishers say they believe the review should also look at how the D-F-O has allowed an illegal fishery to grow without enforcement, and how difficult the officers’ jobs have become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Youth-Bomb-Threat)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police have charged a youth in relation to a school bomb threat in Fall River, Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Halifax police responded to the threat on May 9th at Lockview High School, with the assistance from the R-C-M-P’s Explosive Disposal Unit, which determined there was no risk to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigators say they determined that a threatening message had been written in a bathroom stall at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The youth has been charged with uttering threats and mischief and will appear in court on July 18th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(MUN-Encampment-Removed)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Protestors have returned to Memorial University\u2019s campus in St. John’s, Newfoundland, for demonstrations after police dismantled a pro-Palestinian encampment on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Memorial University removed student protestors from inside the Arts and Administration building, 45 days after the encampments were erected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Protesting students called the university’s actions chaotic, and disorganized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A spokesperson for the university says the university no longer allows overnight protests because of increased staffing resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scorching summer heat is hitting Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Daytime highs are forecast to top 30 degrees Celsius across much of Atlantic Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it could feel closer to 40 in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with humidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Newfoundland and Labrador government has announced John Hogan as the interim minister of health and community services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new role for Hogan is effective immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He takes over from recent retiree Tom Osborne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hogan will also continue as the minister of justice and public safety as well as the province’s Attorney General. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were no reports of serious incidents at Atlantic Canada’s biggest multi-day outdoor country musical festival this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P in Prince Edward Island say the Cavendish Beach Music Festival brought thousands of visitors to the province over the weekend without major incidents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It says the event finished on a positive note and police thanked concertgoers and organizing partners for a safe and incredible festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next up, the Sommo Festival takes place in the province this September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
