Financial returns filed by New Brunswick’s Liberals show they have a healthy lead over the Progressive Conservatives as the parties head toward an election which must be held on or by October 21st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Year-end reports filed this week by the parties to Elections New Brunswick show Liberals have 690-thousand-490 dollars as of December 31st last year, while Progressive Conservatives have 438-thousand-921 dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the end of 2022, the Liberals raised 589-thousand-222 dollars while the Progressive Conservatives had 436-thousand-923 dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tom Bateman, chair of the political science department at St. Thomas University, says while the Liberals have more assets than the Tories, the Progressive Conservatives still have time to make up the deficit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(WEA-NS-Flooding)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Flash flooding was reported in parts of Nova Scotia last night after thunderstorms brought heavy rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A provincial alert issued Thursday night warned of flooding in Digby, Annapolis, Kings and Hants counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Numerous roadways have closed in those areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The provincial government is urging drivers to be cautious and avoid the flooded areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Moncton-Arson)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P have released photos of two suspects wanted for arson in Moncton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mounties say a fire that broke out at a city home in the overnight hours of June 17th was intentionally set on the front porch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They say the owners of the home awoke to the smell of smoke and were able to get out of the house uninjured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Houston-Encampment-Reaction)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston described some of the locations chosen by the City of Halifax for homeless encampments as “nuts.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He made the comment after cabinet meetings yesterday, saying the Halifax Public Commons and Point Pleasant Park aren’t appropriate locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Halifax Mayor Michael Savage says the city is trying to adjust to a problem that isn’t of its making — as housing and homelessness are primarily provincial jurisdictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Houston told reporters his government presented a list of about 40 alternative sites to the municipality for tiny homes and shelter communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-RCMP-Charged-Assault)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An R-C-M-P officer in Nova Scotia has been charged with sexual assault after an investigation by the Serious Incident Response Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Constable William McNutt was charged yesterday with three counts of sexual assault, one count of overcoming resistance to commission of an offence, one count of uttering threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The R-C-M-P says McNutt has been suspended from duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province’s police watchdog says investigators with the R-C-M-P contacted it in January after a woman alleged she was sexually assaulted by an off-duty officer in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newfoundland and Labrador has published a list of standards for public and private emergency homeless shelters to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The standards were released yesterday, as conditions in for-profit shelters has become a key issue in the province’s struggles with homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A report on shelters standards completed by an Ontario consultant covers details ranging from the size of mattresses that must be provided through to the number of staff per guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Newfoundland and Labrador is among the only provinces to contract private landlords to provide emergency shelter to homeless people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Firearms-Charges)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Halifax police have charged a man with firearms offences following an altercation on Highway 7 in the suburb of Cole Harbour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P say they responded to a report on Wednesday evening about an altercation between two drivers on the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police allege that a man driving a black Cadillac pointed a firearm at another driver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mounties say they found the suspect a short time later at his home, where they seized three replica handguns, holsters, and prohibited weapons such as brass knuckles and knives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
