The Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador says cooler temperatures and possible precipitation make for favourable conditions to attack the wildfire threatening Labrador City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a news conference yesterday Andrew Furey said the blaze that exploded into an inferno over the course of Friday did not significantly grow overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says a drop in temperature and change in wind patterns are very encouraging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The premier says despite the progress, it’s too early to say when Labrador City’s roughly 7-thousand-450 residents who were ordered to evacuate Friday night will be allowed to return to their homes. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Fatal-Crash)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P in New Brunswick say three people have died in a single-vehicle crash in Sheffield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Around 3 a-m yesterday morning, members of the Oromocto R-C-M-P detachment responded to the collision and found three people deceased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The crash is believed to have happened when the vehicle swerved off the road and hit a tree before catching fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(PEI-Fatal-Fire)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P in P-E-I are investigating a fatal fire at a cottage in Cavendish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yesterday morning around 5:40 a-m police and fire services responded to a report of a cottage fire on Route 6, and upon arrival the house was engulfed in flames. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three people escaped the fire with injuries, and one person was discovered deceased inside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Cda-Premiers-Conference)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Canada’s 13 premiers are scheduled for three days of meetings in Halifax beginning today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is the current chair of the Council of the Federation and is hosting the event in downtown Halifax. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Houston told reporters last week that premiers will be focused on discussing key issues like affordability, housing and infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Flooding)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A retired Environment Canada meteorologist says it’s well past time for Nova Scotia to work with the federal government to build a robust prediction, detection and alert system for flash flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Thursday night a young person was killed when they were swept away by a flash flood in Wolfville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P said they got a call about the youth being pulled into a flooded ditch at 7:30 p-m, and the province issued an emergency alert about flash flooding about an hour later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jim Abraham, who was the first manager of the Canadian Hurricane Centre, says if Nova Scotia had a well-developed flooding alert system, emergency notices might have gone out much sooner. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-Fire-Ban)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A ban on outdoor fires is in place across Newfoundland and Labrador. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province’s Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture imposed the ban after a fire burning near Labrador City exploded in size and forced residents out of their homes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials say the ban is necessary to help limit the risk of sparking new blazes and allow firefighters to concentrate on those that are already burning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ban forbids people from lighting fires on or within 300 metres of forest land. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
