New Brunswick Premier Blaine Huggs says his government is working to improve life for Black people in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He made the comments while commemorating Emancipation day yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province has observed Emancipation Day since 2022, as an occasion to acknowledge and celebrate the strength, perseverance and heritage of Black communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On August 1st, 1834, the British parliament abolished slavery, freeing about 800-thousand enslaved people from the British colonies, including Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Shooting)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 30-year-old New Brunswick man faces assault charges after shots were fired toward a house in the small community of East Brighton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say he also allegedly assaulted the homeowner in the July 21st incident before fleeing in a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P say they later searched a home in Peel and seized a number of firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a court appearance last week the man was charged with attempted murder, assault and other offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Disabilities-Reforms)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An advocacy group for people with disabilities is once again calling on Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston to ensure a legally mandated plan to improve housing and services meets the milestones of a five year reform plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An independent monitor says the province has delayed moving people out of institutions into the community, as mandated in a five-year human rights remedy put in place last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year, Houston made an historic apology for the mistreatment of people with disabilities, saying \u201ctheir basic human rights have not been honoured nor respected.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vicky Levack, a spokeswoman for the Disability Rights Coalition, says the premier has to return to the values and urgency he so clearly expressed in his historic apology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Official Opposition member Paul Dinn says Glenn Barnes showed a \u201csevere\u201d lack of professionalism and judgment and he must be held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Becky Winsor used a link shared by a pro-Palestinian group on campus to send Barnes a pre-written message supporting calls for the school to divest from weapons manufacturers and entities backing Israel in the ongoing war in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dinn says Barnes violated Winsor\u2019s privacy and the board\u2019s code of conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newfoundland and Labrador is gearing up for another provincial byelection, and once again there is a lack of Liberal red in one candidate’s campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jamie Korab is running for the provincial Liberals in the Waterford Valley district in St. John\u2019s, but his signs say he\u2019s running for Team Furey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The same signage focused on Premier Andrew Furey rather than the Liberal Party he leads was used by Fred Hutton to win another byelection earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Korab will face off against the N-D-P\u2019s Nicole Boland and the Progressive Conservative Jessie Wilkins when voters head to the polls on August 22nd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Acadian-Heritage-Month)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nova Scotia is celebrating more than four centuries of Acadian culture and language over the month of August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province\u2019s first Acadian Heritage Month began yesterday with a ceremonial raising of the Acadian flag at the legislature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Premier Tim Houston and Arthur LeBlanc, the province\u2019s first lieutenant-governor of Acadian descent, were on hand for the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The month will see concerts and other gatherings in Acadian communities across the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
