A picturesque seaside forest in southern New Brunswick is being turned into a nature reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nature Conservancy of Canada says it has acquired 2.3 square kilometres of land from the family of Ruby Brown of St. Martins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conservation group says the new Fundy Bay View Nature Reserve is an important location for migratory shorebirds to stop, feed and rest during their travels north and south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than half the forest is mature, coastal red spruce, with a mixture of balsam fir, red maple and white spruce, and it’s home to a diversity of wildlife, including bear, bobcat and moose, as well as bird species at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newfoundland’s beloved teacher Myrle Vokey, who created the province’s famed “Screech-in” ceremony as a way to celebrate the culture he loved, has died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Krista Vokey says her dad died this weekend in a hospital in St. John’s at the age of 85.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vokey travelled across the province in the 1970s working as a speaker and educator with the provincial teachers association, all while working to instil pride in Newfoundland’s unique dialect, music, humour and reputation for kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Collision-Firefighter)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P in Nova Scotia say a firefighter was hit by a car while assisting with traffic flow at the site of a recent collision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say firefighters and R-C-M-P were on the scene of a car crash near Bear River on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A firefighter doing traffic control had stopped cars going in both directions to make room for a tow truck operator when a woman driving an S-U-V passed the stopped cars and struck the firefighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The firefighter was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a 66-year-old woman was arrested at the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Missing-Kayaker)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Halifax police say they have ended a search for a woman who went missing during a kayaking outing at a local lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The three-day effort at Long Lake Provincial Park to find 26-year-old Jashansdeep Kaur was halted yesterday, and the investigation will continue as a missing person case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Halifax police say they had found Kaur\u2019s cellphone and life-jacket in her kayak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kaur is a South Asian woman who is described as having a slim build, long dark hair, and is roughly five feet tall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(PEI-Watershed-Repair)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A watershed protection group in Prince Edward Island has repaired the water system in Ellerslie thanks to funding from the provincial government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lot 11 and Area Watershed Management Group say they joined together to draft a watershed management plan that the province approved, with 2.1-million-dollars administered from the watershed management fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The group used the funding to repair and improve three culverts along the Foxley River East, which were too small for the amount of water trying to pass through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They say they worked to ensure the funding remained in the community, buying all their supplies and hiring contractors from the West Prince area. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Housing-Opportunities)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nova Scotia has announced changes to housing regulations in the Halifax Regional Municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Housing Minister John Lohr (LORE) says new rules are being introduced to require the municipality to consider current and future housing supply when discussing all land-use planning, regulations, decisions and development approvals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province says the new regulatory changes support the recommendations made by Deloitte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The consulting company had found barriers that prevented a safe and rapid increase of housing in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(PEI-University-Townhall)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The University of Prince Edward Island is scheduled to host a townhall meeting for faculty and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A news release says the meeting is set for Wednesday at 11 a-m, at the amphitheater at the Performing Arts Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It says university officials will discuss a report released last month that helped identify actions to improve oversight, transparency and accountability at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The external review of the university’s board governance was completed by an external consultant.
