The head of Postmedia says job cuts at Atlantic Canada’s largest newspaper chain are necessary because the properties were facing bankruptcy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Andrew MacLeod says he didn\u2019t have specifics concerning the number of recent layoffs, but he described the situation as a \u201cfluid process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MacLeod says a noticeable change will be dropping the SaltWire name in order to emphasize the individual names of the newspapers, especially in online editions, because of their historic links to Atlantic communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Toronto-based Postmedia finalized its one-million-dollar purchase of insolvent SaltWire Network and the Halifax Herald, on Monday, following approval of the sale by a Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge on August 8th. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newfoundland and Labrador’s Minister Responsible for Labour is wishing the province’s workforce a happy Labour Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lisa Dempster released a statement wishing workers well and thanking them for their contributions to the many communities of Newfoundland and Labrador. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dempster says the workers are the backbone of communities across the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She says everyone should take the time to reflect and recognize the workforce, while also having a safe and enjoyable Labour Day weekend.

(NB-Wharf-Funding)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The federal and provincial governments have announced funding to rebuild and strengthen New Brunswick’s Pointe-du-Ch\u00eane wharf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A news release says the federal government will contribute more than eight-million dollars while the New Brunswick government will pay about two-million dollars toward the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project involves work to improve access to the wharf, including its walking paths and parking areas, as well as restoration work on the yacht club\u2019s infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pointe-du-Ch\u00eane Yacht Club was destroyed during post-tropical storm Fiona about two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Housing-Units)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The New Brunswick government says it will give money to support housing projects in Edmundston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A news release says it will give 762-thousand dollars for pre-construction work, such as the development of architectural plans and engineering designs, as well as work related to water and sewer infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It says the money will help housing development in six locations that could hold up to 120 houses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(International-Students)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Universities Canada says enrolment by students from outside the country has fallen below the cap the federal government set on international student visas this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The immigration minister announced a cap in January as a way to quell the rapid increase in the number of international students, citing pressure on housing, health care and other services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new policy limits the number of student visa applications the government would accept into processing, and it’s expected that will result in a 35 per cent drop in the number of students in 2024 compared to last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Universities Canada president Gabriel Miller says the change will actually be bigger than the government predicted, and that will take a major financial toll on schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Workers-Compensation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A report says Nova Scotia has the lowest compensation for injured workers in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report says the system has the highest average employer premiums across Canada \u2014 at two dollars and 65 cents per 100 dollars of assessable payroll \u2014 and the lowest benefits available to injured workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The system is 95 per cent funded, but the report says it’s the only worker compensation program in Canada that is below 100 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(PEI-Lighthouse)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The federal government announced the designation of Blockhouse Point Lighthouse in Prince Edward Island under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It says the 12.8-metre lighthouse with a square-tapered wooden tower sits in Rocky Point at the west entrance of Charlottetown Harbour on the province’s south shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It says the structure was built in 1876 as part of a federal program to improve maritime safety by erecting a network of coastal lighthouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With this new designation, 112 lighthouses in eight provinces have now been protected under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
