Police say officers responded to a report late Sunday evening of a man in mental distress with a weapon in a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mounties say the man refused to drop his weapon and would not co-operate with police, and an officer shot their gun at the man, who later died in hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police don’t detail what happened before the officer fired at the man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Mountie in New Brunswick has been charged with aggravated assault following an investigation into an arrest in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Serious Incident Response Team, which is responsible for investigating police-related violence, announced the charge against Corporal Andrew Whiteway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officer is accused of striking a woman in the face during an arrest near Woodstock on June 13th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police oversight agency says police were called to a family disturbance in Richmond Corner, where an individual sustained a serious injury, but no other details were released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Rent-Cap-Criticism)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Housing advocates and opposition parties say a loophole in Nova Scotia’s rental housing rules is making the provincial government\u2019s proposed rent cap essentially useless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tim Allenby — of the housing advocacy group ACORN — says the province\u2019s efforts to cap rents will not help renters so long as fixed-term leases are allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A fixed-term lease — unlike a periodic lease — has a set start and end date and is not extended beyond the fixed period of time without the signing of a new lease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The provincial rent cap covers periodic lease renewals and situations where a landlord allows someone on a fixed-term lease to sign a new agreement for the same unit \u2014 but it does not apply to leases signed with new tenants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Allenby says this encourages landlords not to re-sign with a tenant and to instead rent to someone new so they can increase the rent well beyond the cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A P-E-I man has been arrested after a third suspicious fire in the Chepstow area in five weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P say the 26-year-old is charged with arson in connection with the string of fires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They say the arrest Saturday came after police responded to an early morning 9-1-1 call about structure fire on Route 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers from Memorial University say ancient fossils found in Newfoundland belong to a newly discovered species of jellyfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 565-million-year-old fossil dug up on the Bonavista Peninsula in 2015 is the earliest known record of an animal with muscle tissue, called Haootia quadriformis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The researchers say in a paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Life they have since documented several new fossils preserving muscle tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They say the four-armed creatures are a newly discovered jellyfish species called Mamsetia manunis, adding the fossils represent a leap forward in our understanding of early life. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The largest children’s hospital in Atlantic Canada has received a huge donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 25-million-dollar donation to the I-W-K Health Centre in Halifax came from Myron and Berna Garron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Myron Garron, who is originally from Westport, Nova Scotia, made a fortune in the automotive parts business in Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The donation will be used to improve the care provided to those with mental health challenges and addictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

P-E-I\u2019s revised Child, Youth and Family Services Act is now in effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the numerous changes, it reduces the length of time a child can be in the temporary care of the Director of Child Protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, youths aging out of care will be able to access supports until the age of 25, rather than the current level of 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
