Progressive Conservative Leader Blaine Higgs is scheduled to hold an event in Edmundston where he will talk about the party’s promise to reduce the harmonized sales tax from 15 to 13 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Liberal Leader Susan Holt began her day with a promise about paying nurses a retention bonus of 10-thousand dollars for their first year of service, and five-thousand dollars for the second year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Green Party Leader David Coon was also expected to begin his day with a health-care announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Fatal-Crash)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New Brunswick R-C-M-P say a 48-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Memramcook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say the crash occurred Wednesday on Highway 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s believed the vehicle left the road and collided with a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mounties say the victim, who was from Saint-Ignace, died at the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governments of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have hired a project manager to oversee plans to shore up the thin strip of land that connects the two provinces.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Experts have long warned that the low-lying Chignecto Isthmus is vulnerable to flooding caused by increasingly powerful storms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nova Scotia Public Works Minister Kim Masland says the two provinces have yet to determine who will pay for what. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, they remain in a public fight with Ottawa, arguing the federal government should cover all of the costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Money-Scams)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says New Brunswick residents have lost more than eight million dollars since 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New data released by the centre says over 15-thousand people lost money to scams in Canada between January 1st and June 30th this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A centre spokesperson says nearly 5.7-million dollars has been lost by New Brunswick residents in just the first six months of the year, up from last year’s three million dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Mass-Casualty-Progress)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The head of a committee monitoring the government’s response to the inquiry into the 2020 Nova Scotia mass killing says she\u2019s pleased with progress made so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Myra Freeman was appointed chair three months ago to the independent committee monitoring how governments and police forces are implementing recommendations from the report into the shooting that killed 22 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The federal-provincial inquiry filed a 3,000-page report with 130 non-binding recommendations into such things as community safety and well-being, police reform and public mental health, access to firearms, and gender-based violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Freeman says she is satisfied that meaningful progress is being made by police and governments in many areas, though she didn’t give details explaining the committee’s first annual report will come in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Entangled-Right-Whale)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An endangered North Atlantic right whale has been spotted entangled in unidentified gear in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The federal Fisheries Department says the whale was sighted Wednesday by an aerial surveillance team northeast of the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula, off Anticosti Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The department says it is continuing to monitor the area and if the whale is located and conditions allow, efforts will be made to disentangle the animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last October, the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium estimated there were 356 North Atlantic right whales left on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
