{"id":54009,"date":"2024-12-18T08:55:18","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T12:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=54009"},"modified":"2024-12-18T10:55:58","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T14:55:58","slug":"parking-lot-coming-for-new-quarry-park-trail-access-off-charlotte-street","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/parking-lot-coming-for-new-quarry-park-trail-access-off-charlotte-street\/","title":{"rendered":"Parking lot coming for new Quarry Park trail access off Charlotte Street"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sackville\u2019s latest trail will have parking access by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a special meeting on Monday, Tantramar council approved hiring Bowser\u2019s Construction to build a small parking lot on Charlotte Street at the trail entrance for the new Quarry Park trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pryde says the lot will hold five to six cars and give access to the new crushed gravel path which leads to a newly constructed bridge and viewing platform looking down into the quarry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 300 metre path in from Charlotte Street provides an \u201caccessible option, so that people can come in and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the quarry property,\u201d says Pryde. Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tantramar\u2019s public works department was originally slated to do the work on the parking lot, but Pryde told council Monday that due to unpredictable weather slowing down other responsibilities, they are no longer able to complete the work before the end of the year. So in order to cover the expense under this year\u2019s budget, staff decided to seek quotes from local construction companies. Bowsers came back with the lowest bid of $16,260 plus HST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pryde told council he has secured additional grants from the province and Medavie Blue Cross that nearly double the approved $65,000 municipal budget for the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_5180-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_5180-2.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_5180-2-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/IMG_5180-2-768x576.jpg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The new bridge over the creek that runs into the Pickard Quarry ponds from Charlotte Street.  Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the spring, Pryde says there\u2019s more work to be completed. \u201cWe need to get the interpretive signs designed and installed. We still need to buy picnic tables. There&#8217;s still trail work to do,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former sandstone quarry has been used as a wilderness getaway for decades, and when the town acquired the property from Mount Allison in 2023, the Tantramar Outdoor Club\u2019s Richard Elliot spearheaded the initiative to invest in the trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tantramar Outdoor Club volunteers are still involved doing trail cutting and maintenance work, which includes getting rid of as much invasive multiflora rose as possible. The Tantramar Heritage Trust and Chignecto Naturalists are also involved, consulting on information for interpretive signage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pryde says the new trail will not be part of the municipality\u2019s winter maintenance plan, so once the snow comes, it will remain less accessible until spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sackville\u2019s latest trail will have parking access by the end of the year.
