Manthey is in Sackville this week along with a group of paintings that will be featured in a new exhibition: <a href=\"https:\/\/owensartgallery.com\/exhibition\/bannister\/\">Hidden Blackness: Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828-1901)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edward Mitchell Bannister was a Black artist born in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, who spent most of his adult life in Providence, Rhode Island, where he was also a prominent abolitionist and philanthropist.&nbsp;Hidden Blackness is the first major exhibition of Edward Mitchell Bannister\u2019s work ever presented in Canada, 124 years after the artist\u2019s death.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHMA drops in to the Owens Art Gallery to speak with Gwen Manthey,&nbsp; a paintings conservator with the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.
