New Brunswick politician Jenica Atwin says she is leaving federal politics for the “time being” because of the online hate she receives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Atwin says the level of toxicity she’s had to face has been surprising since being first elected in 2019 with the Green party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Atwin ultimately crossed the aisle and joined the Liberals in 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She says she has had a barrage of hateful comments and posts directed toward her, including bomb threats, threats of sexual violence and other verbal abuse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Mental-Health)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The jury at a New Brunswick coroner’s inquest is making recommendations aimed at improving the mental health services available in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The inquest looked at the death of Kaytlyn Hemsworth, who died in a psychiatric facility in Moncton in April of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The five-member jury is recommending the introduction of continuous patient monitoring with wearable devices that track vital signs, such as heart rate, oxygen saturation and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other recommendations include reducing patient to nurse ratios, keeping doors and windows clear of obstructions and changing guidelines to eliminate lapses in health care caused by multi-tasking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Human-Rights-Hearing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission is opening an independent inquiry on a case of discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The board will look at the matter of Sherri Borden Colley and franchise business The Source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Colley alleges The Source acted in a discriminatory manner against her and that she was treated differently while shopping at the Elmsdale Shopping Centre because of her race, skin colour and gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Board chair Eric Slone is expected to oversee the inquiry, with it launching February 6th in Halifax. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Break-And-Enter)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P in Nova Scotia’s Lunenburg County are asking the public to help identify anyone involved with a series of break and enter investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mounties say there was an attempted break in at a gas station in Barss Corner, with damage to the building but no items stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They also say a workshop in Barss Corner was broken into, with eight-thousand dollars worth of tools stolen, while a business in New Germany was also burglarized and saw four-thousand dollars worth of equipment taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anyone with information is being advised to call in and help with the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-Eating-Disorder-Awareness)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Newfoundland and Labrador’s minister of mental health and addictions is set to participate in a proclamation signing to recognize Eating Disorder Awareness Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minister John Abbott will sign the proclamation as part of the government’s commitment to mental health in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From February 26th to March 3rd, the National Institute of Mental heath tries to raise awareness on eating disorders by sharing information and materials related the latest research efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The signing will be hosted by the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in the main lobby of the Confederation Building, East Block. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(PEI-Fortified-Buildings)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
P-E-I’s government is asking Islanders what they think about a new bill that could regulate the use of excessive security features on some buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposed legislation aims to address buildings that have extreme security. such as reinforced windows and bullet proof glass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bill claims regulation would prevent interference with emergency response, as such measures could prevent firefighters or police from gaining entry to the structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The draft also considers the impacts of high security on a structure in the event of an emergency — but if the additions prevent people from getting out, such as during a fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
