Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An environmental impact assessment for a major NB Power project to add an additional high voltage transmission line through Tantramar is now available for review and comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase 1 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbpower.com\/en\/about-us\/projects\/new-brunswick-nova-scotia-interprovincial-transmission-line-project\">East Coast Interprovincial Clean Energy Project<\/a> will see a new high voltage line added alongside the existing line running from Salisbury through Memramcook and Tantramar, and across the border to connect with Nova Scotia Power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NB Power is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbpower.com\/en\/about-us\/in-the-community\/nb-ns-interprovincial-transmission-line-project\/\">hosting four open houses <\/a>about the project next week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monday, February 3, 2025, 3pm to 7pm<br>Salisbury Lions Club, 63 Peter Street, Salisbury, NB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tuesday, February 4, 2025, 3pm to 7pm<br>Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre, 182 Main Street, Sackville, NB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wednesday, February 5, 2025, 3pm to 7pm<br>Club d\u2019\u00e2ge d\u2019or de Memramcook (Berceau), 409, route la Vall\u00e9e, Memramcook, NB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tuesday, February 11, 2025, 3pm to 7pm<br>Pine Glen Community Centre, 1003 Pine Glen Rd., Pine Glen, NB<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Registration documents (<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gnb.ca\/content\/dam\/gnb\/Departments\/env\/pdf\/EIA-EIE\/Registrations-Engegistrements\/documents\/eia-registration-1642.pdf\">click here for the PDF<\/a>) for the environmental impact assessment can be viewed on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gnb.ca\/content\/gnb\/en\/departments\/elg\/environment\/content\/environmental_impactassessment\/registrations\/2025.html\">New Brunswick Department of Environment and Local Government\u2019s website<\/a>. Pending approval, construction on the project is expected to begin in fall 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2023, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/high-voltage-transmission-line-expansion-sparks-concerns-from-residents-but-advocates-say-its-needed\/\">son of property owners in the path of the high voltage line expansion presented to Tantramar council<\/a>, asking them to officially oppose the project until their concerns could be addressed, but the motion was not considered by council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NB Power says the proposed interprovincial transmission line project consists of approximately 265 km of new high voltage line to be developed in two phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase 1 consists of approximately 65 km of new 345kV transmission line running from \u201can expanded terminal near Salisbury to an expanded terminal in Memramcook, and then to the New Brunswick-Nova Scotia border where it connects with Nova Scotia Power\u2019s line through to the Onslow terminal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"890\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_2405.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_2405.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_2405-768x534.jpeg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Panel image from Nova Scotia Power, who were part of a July 2023 open house at the Tantramar Civic Centre.   Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase 2 is approximately 200 km of new, 345kV transmission line running from \u201cexisting terminals at Point Lepreau, Coleson Cove and Norton which will be expanded to accommodate the new electrical infrastructure which will run adjacent to existing transmission lines between Point Lepreau to Salisbury.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbpower.com\/en\/about-us\/news-media-centre\/news\/2025\/nb-power-registers-the-environmental-impact-assessment-eia-for-the-nbns-interprovincial-transmission-line-project\/\">news release<\/a>, NB Power CEO Lori Clark says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGrid modernization is one of our key strategic priorities.
