It&#8217;s official launch at the Drew is now the 27th Home the program is operating in, with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada under the Healthy Seniors Pilot Project. <strong>Local Sackville coordinator Rachelle Gariepy<\/strong> explained the program\u2019s core mission:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cNursing Home Without Walls is all about supporting aging in place\u2014helping seniors live securely and well in their own homes and community.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/NSWW-FINISHED-PIECE.wav\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innovative Approach &amp; Expansion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program was created by researcher <strong>Dr. Suzanne Dupuis-Blanchard, a professor and researcher at the Universit\u00e9 de Moncton.<\/strong> Reflecting on her experience in community healthcare, she saw a critical gap in support services for seniors wanting to remain in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe have great home care programs, but when it comes to social support and fighting isolation, the resources just weren\u2019t there,\u201d<\/em> she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To Suzanne&#8217;s knowledge, this model is the first of its kind. Unlike many formal senior care programs, it offers easier access to services without rigid qualification requirements, making it more accessible for seniors who may not meet the criteria for traditional government support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The provincial government has recognized its value and is now working through Social Development to allow any nursing home in New Brunswick to adopt the program over the next three years. Additionally, research is underway to expand beyond the province, with an interprovincial launch planned for Spring 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Growing Demand and Key Services<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite just launching, the Sackville branch already has 60 seniors registered on launch day, with 500 more benefiting from the Port Elgin program &#8211; part of the initial programs pilot project. The initiative provides essential services, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social interactions, visits and phone calls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health Information and Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transportation assistance for medical appointments and community events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help navigating government forms and resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to accessible bathing facilities at The Drew Nursing Home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to early research, 69% of seniors using the program had said it has helped them stay in their homes longer &#8211; a testament to its success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Community Support and the Need for Volunteers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For local seniors like <strong>Bob Nelson<\/strong>, the program offers peace of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI don\u2019t need it much right now, but knowing it\u2019s available is reassuring. You never know what\u2019s coming.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Linda Shannon, Executive Director of The Drew<\/strong>, emphasized the importance of reducing social isolation, especially after COVID-19 exposed the challenges many seniors face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThis program is a huge benefit\u2014not just for our 40 senior residents but for the wider Sackville community.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success of Nursing Homes Without Walls depends on community involvement.
