The yearly event recognizes the contribution of Mount Allison\u2019s student athletes to the campus and the wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHMA spoke with Deputy Mayor Matt Estabrooks, Mount Allison Athletics director Neil MacEachern, &#8216;Voice of the Mounties&#8217; Steve Ridlington, and some of the roughly 40 Mountie athletes gathered for the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/CHMA-Mountie-Day-2025.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think even the student athletes themselves realize the impact that they have in the community, especially on our youth,\u201d said Deputy Mayor Estabrooks. \u201cThey contribute to all of our minor sports organizations. Football, hockey, soccer, swimming\u2026 they are there. Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mt A interim director of athletics Neil MacEachern said he was pleased with the turnout, especially compared to reduced participation in the pandemic years. \u201cThey&#8217;re excited about today, and they&#8217;re excited about their banquet tonight,\u201d said MacEachern, referring to the annual Night of the Mounties awards banquet which also took place Thursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dozens of athletes and coaches were honoured, with volleyball Mountie Erica Astephen (Halifax, NS) and football Mountie Owen O\u2019Neal (Sackville, NB) taking home athlete of the year awards. The full list is <a href=\"https:\/\/mta.ca\/about\/news\/mount-allison-athletics-honours-top-student-athletes-fri-03282025-0817\">available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his opening remarks on Thursday, Estabrooks noted some of the highlights of the 2024-25 athletics season, including an ACAA championship for the Mounties women\u2019s volleyball team, and the Mounties badminton team number two national ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Longtime Sackville resident and \u2018Voice of the Mounties\u2019 Steve Ridlington was at Thursday\u2019s Mountie Day celebration, and told CHMA the student athletes provide \u201can incredible bridge between the community and the university,\u201d and also give local fans \u201cthe opportunity to see some of the most advanced amateur athletes in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1095\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Hockey-Mounties-Harazny-LeBlanc-.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Hockey-Mounties-Harazny-LeBlanc-.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Hockey-Mounties-Harazny-LeBlanc--600x513.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Hockey-Mounties-Harazny-LeBlanc--768x657.jpg 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Virginia Harazny and Emily LeBlanc of the Mounties women&#8217;s hockey team, at Mountie Day festivities on March 27, 2025.  Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the roughly 40 student-athletes in attendance were hockey Mounties Virginia Harazny and Emily LeBlanc. The second year students from Wilcox, Saskatchewan and Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, New Brunswick said this was a development year for their team, but they are hopeful for the coming seasons. The Tantramar raising of the Mountie flag was \u201can awesome privilege\u201d, said Harazny. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also a rebuilding year for the women\u2019s soccer Mounties, said student-athlete Maeve Williams, but at the same time notes the larger value of her athletics experience. \u201cThis is how I&#8217;ve met all my friends,\u201d said Williams. \u201cIt\u2019s a really important part for me, playing sport at university. So getting to have a day where we&#8217;re appreciated is just really nice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>CORRECTION<\/strong>: A previous version of this story incorrectly labelled Steve Ridlington as the &#8220;retired&#8221; and &#8220;former&#8221; &#8216;Voice of the Mounties&#8217;.
