Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount Allison writer and professor Lauren Beck is nominated for a New Brunswick Book award this year for her work, alongside co-author Margaret Augustine, called Mitji, Let\u2019s Eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHMA caught up with the Visual and Material Culture Studies professor in April, and started off asking about where the idea for Mitji\u2013Let\u2019s Eat! came from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Lauren-Beck-on-Mitji-lets-eat-Apr-3-2025-edited.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beck says a shared interest in food with her co-author Margaret Augustine helped seed the idea for the book, along with the realization that there was Mi\u2019kmaq food knowledge to be passed on to younger generations. \u201cWe hope that the elders voices come through with their knowledge,\u201d says Beck, \u201cso we can see it shared with broader audiences, but especially with Mi\u2019kmaq youth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elders in three main communities\u2014Indian Island First Nation, Elsipogtog First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation\u2014contributed stories and knowledge, says Beck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"957f79\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #957f79;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"754\" height=\"598\" sizes=\"(max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-13-at-4.43.07\u202fPM.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58157 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-13-at-4.43.07\u202fPM.webp 754w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-13-at-4.43.07\u202fPM-600x476.webp 600w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Map of the Districts of Mi&#8217;kma&#8217;ki, from Parks Canada. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beck met Augustine while the latter was doing genealogical research at the Mount Allison University. \u201cThe librarian that was working with them called me in, and that sparked the relationship,\u201d says Beck. The pair found a \u201ca joint intellectual interest in Mi\u2019kmaq food ways, and then went to develop the Mitji\u2014Let\u2019s Eat! project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beck says she is interested in \u201cdecolonization through the senses\u201d, and it doesn\u2019t hurt that she is also an avid eater and enjoys cooking. \u201cWhen you have projects where you have personal and intellectual interests married together, kind of knitted together, it can be quite satisfying to work on them,\u201d says Beck. Another source of satisfaction for Beck and Augustine has been, \u201clearning from elders and then sharing with them what we learned, and seeing them see their own knowledge affirmed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mitji\u2014Let\u2019s Eat! is not simply a book of recipes, though it is full of them. There\u2019s also essays and short stories that help shed some light on what Beck calls \u201cgastro-colonialism\u201d, and also how Mi\u2019kmaq people have \u201cresisted and thrived\u201d in the face of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beck says the book is aimed at passing on knowledge to Mi\u2019kmaq youth, but also to a broader audience of settler Canadians, who might want to learn more about Indigenous culture. \u201cFood is a great means of doing that,\u201d says Beck, \u201cbecause we all have to eat. We can share this experience through food and connect through food.\u201d Beck says she and Augustine have tried to make the subject matter \u201caccessible to different audiences who maybe don&#8217;t know what Mitji means, or maybe don&#8217;t know what Siknuktuk signifies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mitji\u2014Let\u2019s Eat is nominated for a New Brunswick Book Award in non-fiction.
