{"id":58702,"date":"2025-05-26T07:45:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T10:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=58702"},"modified":"2025-05-26T09:46:04","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T12:46:04","slug":"celebrating-grace-annie-lockhart-first-woman-to-receive-a-bachelors-degree-in-the-british-empire-150-years-ago-at-mt-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/celebrating-grace-annie-lockhart-first-woman-to-receive-a-bachelors-degree-in-the-british-empire-150-years-ago-at-mt-a\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Grace Annie Lockhart, first woman to receive a bachelor&#8217;s degree in the British Empire, 150 years ago at Mt A"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount Allison graduates had their moment to cross the stage at Convocation Hall and receive their degrees earlier this month, but 150 years ago this weekend, another graduate earned her degree and achieved a historic first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 25th, 1875, <a href=\"https:\/\/libraryguides.mta.ca\/firsts\/grace_annie_lockhart\">Grace Annie Lockhart<\/a> became the first woman in the British Empire to earn a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"998056\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #998056;\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"710\" height=\"600\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2007_07_0161resized.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58705 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2007_07_0161resized.webp 710w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2007_07_0161resized-600x507.webp 600w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mount Allison Wesleyan College, Class of 1875.  Mount Allison University Archives Photo Collection, 2007.07\/171<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in Saint John, Lockhart came to Mount Allison as a 16-year-old, attending the Ladies College and first completing her Mistress of Liberal Arts degree. Then a year later, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree, and made history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHMA sat down with Mount Allison archivist David Mawhinney to hear more about Lockhart\u2019s story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CHMA-Mawhinney-on-Lockhart.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockhart came to Mount Allison during a time when women were highly controlled and segregated at the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny time that they would have left the building to go on a processed walk, they would have been chaperoned by faculty or other women from the community,\u201d says Mawhinney. \u201cMen were not allowed to see them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, says Mawhinney, the academic program available to women at Mount Allison was created by <a href=\"https:\/\/libraryguides.mta.ca\/firsts\/mary_electa_adams\">Mary Electa Adams<\/a>, a woman who had the \u201cdrive and desire to ensure that women were educated at the same level as men.\u201d Adams had attended Victoria College in Ontario and been denied the opportunity to get a bachelor&#8217;s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe thing that is sort of nice to think about is that she lived long enough to know that she had set that process in place,\u201d says Mawhinney, \u201cand would have been able to read about one of the students that came after her actually receiving that degree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b8bcb8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b8bcb8;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"484\" height=\"600\" sizes=\"(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2007_07_0334resized.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58704 not-transparent\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Grace Annie Lockhart, 1875. Property of Mount Allison University Archives, 2007.07\/334<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before Grace Annie Lockhart could graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, the powers that be at Mount Allison had to make the decision to grant degrees to women. Mawhinney says there are some theories about why Mount Allison took that step when it did, setting the stage for a historic first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was small. It was nimble,\u201d says Mawhinney of Mount Allison at the time. The class that Lockhart graduated with had eight graduates. \u201cSo in that time period, I think that there would have been a lot of cross pollination,\u201d says Mawhinney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there\u2019s the principal of the Ladies College at the time, James R. Inch, who later became president of Mount Allison, who \u201chad the belief that women were as intelligent as men,\u201d says Mawhinney. \u201cHe had a mixture of his own children, daughters and sons, and he believed that they both should get the same education, regardless of what their gender was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change to allow women to pursue a Bachelor\u2019s degree was announced in <a href=\"https:\/\/libraryguides.mta.ca\/historic_mount_allison\/lingley_hall\">Lingley Hall<\/a> in 1872, says Mawhinney. \u201cI have this very romantic idea of Grace Annie Lockhart actually sitting there,\u201d he says. \u201cMaybe he inspired her to be that person that wanted to get that degree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The celebration of the 150th anniversary of Grace Annie Lockhart&#8217;s history graduation involved a number of special activities during this year&#8217;s Convocation weekend.  And there&#8217;s also another special project underway, says Mawhinney, an effort to have Canada Post recognize Lockhart with a stamp.  While the process was not complete in time for the 150th anniversary, Mawhinney hopes to see Lockhart&#8217;s achievement as the first woman to receive a bachelor&#8217;s degree in the British Empire honoured in future.  &#8220;I do think it&#8217;s warranted,&#8221;
