{"id":59421,"date":"2025-06-05T07:46:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T10:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=59421"},"modified":"2025-06-05T09:55:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T12:55:27","slug":"greens-call-for-a-minister-responsible-for-public-transportation-in-nb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/greens-call-for-a-minister-responsible-for-public-transportation-in-nb\/","title":{"rendered":"Greens call for a minister responsible for public transportation in NB"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"776a63\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #776a63;\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"736\" height=\"419\" sizes=\"(max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Screenshot-2025-06-05-at-9.46.28\u202fAM.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59423 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Screenshot-2025-06-05-at-9.46.28\u202fAM.webp 736w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Screenshot-2025-06-05-at-9.46.28\u202fAM-600x342.webp 600w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Green MLAs David Coon and Megan Mitton in a video  posted to social media this week, calling for improvements to New Brunswick&#8217;s public transportation systems. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton and Green Party leader David Coon are calling attention to the sorry state of regional public transportation in New Brunswick in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/19DTZvtjbf\/\">video recently posted to social media<\/a> showing the pair of Green MLAs taking the train from Moncton to Sackville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnfortunately, in New Brunswick, the train is not very reliable or convenient,\u201d says Mitton to the camera from her seat on VIA Rail\u2019s The Ocean, which runs three times per week between Halifax and Montreal. \u201cIt&#8217;s also not connected to the regional bus system operated by Maritime Bus,\u201d says Mitton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greens have some specific ideas on how to address some of the shortcomings in public transportation in New Brunswick, but their main ask in this video call-out is to put someone in charge of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one is responsible for it,\u201d says Mitton in an interview with CHMA this week. \u201cThe current Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is not responsible for public transportation,\u201d she says, and while some cities have their own transit systems, \u201cthere&#8217;s nothing else.\u201d That\u2019s why the Greens are calling for the Liberal government to appoint a \u201cminister responsible for public transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Mitton-June-3-2025-public-transpo.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to have coordinated effort to get people around the province in a way that&#8217;s better for our environment and our pocketbooks,\u201d says Mitton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe would have a minister who would actually go to the table and talk to VIA Rail, and talk to CN, and figure out having the rail line improved between Campbellton and Sackville, for example,\u201d says Mitton. \u201cAnd have the trains actually traveling more often and on time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mitton says the trip that she and Coon took from Moncton to Sackville took two hours and 15 minutes. \u201cIf it takes over two hours to get between Moncton and Sackville and costs a fair bit of money, you can see why people don&#8217;t choose that,\u201d says Mitton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Greens\u2019 video, Coon says, \u201cwe could have commuter rail in New Brunswick, just like other parts of the country,\u201d and suggests focussing on improving existing service between Campbellton and Sackville, and connecting Sackville, Moncton, and Saint John on existing tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mitton says that transportation challenges were brought up regularly in provincial health care consultations, and there\u2019s potential for public transportation options to help people get to medical appointments, as well as commuting.
