Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volunteers from the Sackville Community Garden and Open Sky Cooperative were in downtown Sackville on Wednesday, planting four Bridge Street flower beds with new pollinator gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea came from the Sackville Community Garden, said Tantramar\u2019s Active Living and Culture director Matt Pryde. In past years, the municipality has planted the beds with annual plants, but this year, \u201cthe community garden reached out to us to just try to do something a little bit different,\u201d said Pryde on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Hear this story as reported on Tantramar Report:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CHMA-pollinator-gardens.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new downtown pollinator beds will help the case for a possible Tantramar application to become a Bee City Canada community. Active Living &amp; Culture manager Jamie Ferguson pitched the idea of applying for the pollinator-friendly designation to council last week, and council is expected to make their decision on June 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-chma wp-block-embed-chma\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"wOzX8sWix4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/tantramar-could-become-nbs-first-bee-city-community-with-pollinator-protection-resolution\/\">Tantramar could become NB&#8217;s first Bee City community with pollinator protection resolution<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Tantramar could become NB&#8217;s first Bee City community with pollinator protection resolution&#8221; &#8212; CHMA\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/tantramar-could-become-nbs-first-bee-city-community-with-pollinator-protection-resolution\/embed\/#?secret=oLSClLm7q5#?secret=wOzX8sWix4\" data-secret=\"wOzX8sWix4\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a great kind of kickoff to the Bee City proposal,\u201d said Ferguson. \u201cCreating new beds with native pollinator plants in the downtown core is pretty great to see happening here.\u201d Ferguson says after the Sackville Community Garden and Open Sky Cooperative brought the idea to the town, they decided to \u201cconvert some of our annual budget over to doing a more perennial garden beds here on Bridge Street.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And because perennials come back year after year, there will be reduced costs over time, said Ferguson. \u201cEventually, you know, we&#8217;ll be able to split these out and put them in other beds around the municipality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"948071\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #948071;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_6091-2.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59473 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_6091-2.webp 960w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_6091-2-450x600.webp 450w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/IMG_6091-2-768x1024.webp 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Some of the volunteer work crew planting a new native perennial flower bed at Bridge and Main Street in Sackville.  Photo: Erica Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah Evans is one of the Sackville Community Garden members who spearheaded the downtown pollinator initiative. She says members were inspired by the pollinator gardens created at the Charles Street garden, and decided they could expand downtown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese beds have been here for a few years on Bridge Street,\u201d said Evans, \u201cand they&#8217;re very noticeable. And I&#8217;m downtown every day and look at them, and people kept saying they could look really nice with better annuals or different annuals. And we just thought, what a great opportunity to put perennials in here and just have it be a really fun, exciting, permanent garden.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evans says the group has chosen plants that will offer a variety of shapes, colours, sizes and flowers all season long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a pretty challenging space for plants to grow in, so they&#8217;re not going to do a tonne this year,\u201d said Evans, \u201cbut in following years, they&#8217;ll do better. And it&#8217;ll be interesting to see also what plants really thrive. Some are going to spread and go crazy. Others are going to probably disappear and die out because they don&#8217;t like this kind of an environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christie MacFadyen is a new Sackville resident, member of the Sackville Community Garden, and a volunteer at the Open Sky Cooperative, who are both partnering on the pollinator project.
