New Brunswick’s auditor general says the province’s electric utility paid 1.15 million dollars in early retirement incentives for eight employees who had already announced they were leaving the Crown corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The audit by Paul Martin found the Crown corporation didn\u2019t save as much as it anticipated, when it first announced the program in October 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although early retirement contracts stated the employees won’t be given future jobs at the utility, Martin’s report found three of them were rehired by NB Power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The auditor general concluded that N-B Power’s overall staffing levels continued to grow despite the program. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Disabilities-Reform)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nova Scotia government says its five-year plan to bring about reforms in housing for people with disabilities is gaining momentum — even if some elements are behind schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2021, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal ruled that the province was systemically discriminating against people with disabilities and a plan was created to move people out of large institutions into the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a progress report two years in, released today, the province says only 188 people have left large institutions, a number that is about two-thirds of the goal the government had set for the spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Social Development Minister Scott Armstrong says staff trained to assist the program are in place, and he expects the province will complete the plan as scheduled by 2028. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Shots-Fired)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The R-C-M-P is seeking information in relation to shots fired in the Halifax suburb of East Preston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigators say shots were fired in the 200 block of Brooks Drive on Sunday night as two vehicles travelling down the road exchanged gunfire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nobody was injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-Fire-Investigation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mounties in eastern Newfoundland are looking for information about two recent brush fires, one of which destroyed several homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
R-C-M-P say the most recent fire near Adam\u2019s Cove happened last week and it was not reported to police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last month, a brush fire forced a state of emergency in the town and destroyed roughly a dozen homes in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say there is no evidence suggesting the fires were intentionally set, but their cause is still under investigation. (The Canadian Press) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Salmon-Farming-Film)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Atlantic Salmon Federation is promoting the release of a documentary it co-produced about the waste created by industrial scale salmon aquaculture in Newfoundland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was filmed last year in Burgeo, Grey River, Conne River, Grand-Falls Windsor, Corner Brook, and Hermitage Bay — telling the story of people who want to protect coasts from plastic wastes generated by aquaculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Josh Murphy says the film crew saw large amounts of plastic waste left behind by salmon farms, and heard the concerns of people who don’t want this pollution near their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
