This weekend, the manor is hosting its annual Summer Market, drawing visitors to the property\u2019s outdoor beer garden for live music, games, and local vendors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the event is just one chapter in a much larger story. Click to hear the audio story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Thirsty-Whippet-5-46.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in 1840, the manor was once the home of Sir Albert Smith, a Dorchester-based lawyer and politician, who went on to serve as one of New Brunswick\u2019s premiers. Smith was the first person in the province knighted by Queen Victoria and notably delayed the province\u2019s entry into Confederation by two years. His wife, Lady Smith, quite younger lived in the home for another 40 years after his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miriam Andrews and her husband Stephen Trites purchased the property in 2019. I spoke with Andrews in the Beer Garden outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had one working bathroom and two-thirds of the house had no plumbing or electricity,\u201d said Andrews. \u201cBut we felt like if we didn\u2019t take it on, it might have been knocked down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"665a56\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #665a56;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1086\" height=\"927\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1086px) 100vw, 1086px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ae1685e2-1e44-4aec-a27f-aeb0a459130e.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61278 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ae1685e2-1e44-4aec-a27f-aeb0a459130e.webp 1086w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ae1685e2-1e44-4aec-a27f-aeb0a459130e-600x512.webp 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ae1685e2-1e44-4aec-a27f-aeb0a459130e-768x656.webp 768w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple moved from British Columbia in search of a venue for their event business. \u201cI had a vintage rental company out west,\u201d said Andrews, \u201cand I got tired of hauling things around. I figured it would be easier if people came to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They renovated the manor room by room and now host weddings, overnight guests, live music, and seasonal experiences. The manor also includes a licensed pub, one of the only in the Dorchester area in quite a while. One of which takes place with weekend, with 27 vendors coming to Dorchester from around the Maritimes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Summer Market began Friday and continues today, Saturday, July 20, with Andrews expecting over a thousand visitors. This year\u2019s theme, \u201cThe Greatest Showman,\u201d includes costumed staff, scavenger hunts, cotton candy, and circus games. \u201cMy husband built me a lion cage and a ticket booth,\u201d she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while the painting in the one of the many rooms has become a favourite photo stop for visitors who believe it\u2019s Lady Smith herself, Andrews confessed it was a Christmas gift from a friend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know who she is,\u201d she said. \u201cBut let\u2019s just say it
