About 60 students in eastern Newfoundland will be starting school in September in an unfamiliar place after a wildfire destroyed their school along the northwestern coast of Conception Bay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
News of the destruction of Cabot Academy came as some of the families in the area were waiting to find out if their homes were still standing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dale Lambe, president of the union representing teachers in the province, says the teachers association is working with the provincial government to make sure teachers and students in the area are supported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One wildfire prevention officer is peeling back the curtain at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre in Fredericton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Roger Collet manages how firefighters and other resources are dispatched based on weather patterns, burn tracking, and other data he monitors in real time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says most new wildfires in the province are reported to the centre, then Collet and his team use the data to determine the best way to fight the fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thirty-one active fires were burning in the province as of Tuesday afternoon, with five considered out of control. (CBC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About one-thousand professors, librarians and other teaching staff are locked out by Atlantic Canada’s largest university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dalhousie University in Halifax locked out its employees yesterday amid a contract dispute with the faculty association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The faculty association has said the main issues in the dispute are wages and the university’s reliance on limited-term contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school says while its decision “has not been made lightly,” it locked out professors after it offered them salary increases of two per cent per year, over three years. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Fatal-Crash)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New Brunswick R-C-M-P say a 53-year-old Rusagonis man is dead after a two-vehicle crash in Waasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police say they responded Tuesday evening to the crash on Nevers Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The collision is believed to have occurred when the driver of a vehicle that was turning into a driveway was struck by a motorcycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-Health-Review)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Newfoundland and Labrador government has launched a review of the provincial health authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The province says the review comes from a shared commitment to improve oversight and public trust in the health system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The review has several goals, including improvements to N-L Health Services’ governance and accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It will also determine the appropriate amount of oversight the health authority needs from the provincial health minister. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Court-Stenos)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The New Brunswick government and the province’s 80 court stenographers have signed a new collective agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government says the agreement includes a general wage increase of five dollars per hour over four years, retroactive to October 1st, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Employees will receive hourly wage increases of one dollar in the first year, one-dollar-10-cents in the second year, one-dollar-30-cents in the third year, and one-dollar-60-cents in the fourth year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-Dry-Conditions)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meteorologist Eddie Sheerr says Newfoundland and Labrador needs several months of above-average rain or snowfall to avoid a repeat of this summer’s drought-like conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Scheer says St. John’s had a dry winter and the city has so far seen less than half the rain it typically gets in June, July and August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says this summer’s dry air, hot temperatures and gusty winds made ideal conditions to fuel the wildfires that have destroyed cabins, homes and other structures in Newfoundland since May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
