New Brunswick’s minister responsible for women\u2019s equality says International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is an important reminder of the violence that exists in communities around the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lyne Chantal Boudreau says gender-based violence is an epidemic in New Brunswick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Boudreau says the provincial government is spending 20-million dollars on enhancing gender-based violence services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She says communities have a role to play as well, by listening to and believing survivors and helping them connect with resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A farmers advocacy group says it will lobby the federal government for a guaranteed annual income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The idea by the National Farmers Union came from its annual convention, held last week in New Brunswick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Farmers want Ottawa to set up a 10-year pilot project that would ensure they receive an annual income of at least 50-thousand dollars, a rate that would rise by inflation every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Members also voted to lobby Ottawa for a cap on the profits of major grocery chains, such as Sobeys or Loblaws, that control the lion’s share of the market. (The Canadian Press)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World champion curler and broadcaster Colleen Jones has died at the age of 65.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jones’s son Luke Saunders shared news of her death yesterday on social media, saying his mother passed away while looking out at the ocean from her favourite spot in the Nova Scotia coastal community of Maders Cove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Halifax native was a consistent presence on C-B-C T-V for nearly four decades and was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jones was diagnosed with cancer in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nova Scotia Power says regular meter reading should resume by the end of March, following a security breach last April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Tuesday, the utility\u2019s C-E-O, Peter Gregg, answered questions from the provincial natural resources committee regarding data security and rising bills for customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gregg told the committee that after the security breach, N-S Power was unable to digitally read power meters on customers\u2019 homes and resorted to using estimates for bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some customers have reported the estimated bills are higher than they were last year over the same period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Newfoundlanders have been appointed to a new federal economic advisory panel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Former finance minister Cathy Bennett and Anne Whelan, the lead director at the Bank of Canada, are among the new panel members announced yesterday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The federal minister in charge of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Sean Fraser, says the panel will meet with people across the region to hear about their needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
