The incident happened at the Cape Road site during high winds, and no workers were injured. WorkSafeNB, the architect, and Rice Contracting are now investigating the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>Listen to the story here:<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/FIRE-HALL-SETBACVK.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collapse affects one of Tantramar\u2019s largest recent infrastructure projects. The new fire hall is a $5.6 million dollar build, approved last year to replace the community\u2019s 1960s station. The facility is designed to house larger fire trucks, expand fire service capacity, and include a small municipal office. Fire officials previously called the project a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/dorchesters-new-5-6-million-fire-station-is-a-go-and-will-be-huge-positive-boost-says-chief\/\">huge positive boost for Dorchester<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"7b818e\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #7b818e;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"721\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251201_130259-1280x721.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-69008 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251201_130259-1280x721.avif 1280w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251201_130259-600x338.avif 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251201_130259-768x432.avif 768w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251201_130259-1536x865.avif 1536w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251201_130259-2048x1153.avif 2048w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/20251201_130259-1320x743.avif 1320w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sup>The &#8216;old&#8217; Dorchester Fire Hall, built in the 1960s, a block from the new site | Photo: Clinton Davis\/CHMA News<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael Beal, Director of Financial Services for the Municipality of Tantramar, said a combination of factors may have contributed to last week\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a question, whether it was wind related\u2026 the fencing\u2026 got tipped over by the wind\u2026 the trusses weren&#8217;t fully braced yet because they were still being installed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked if this would impact taxpayers, Beal said, \u201cthe site is 100 percent the responsibility of Rice Contracting and Rice Contracting will be 100 percent on the hook\u2026 for all costs relating to\u2026 that issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Beal, new trusses have already been ordered, and the municipality expects only a short delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt this point, we only envision a two-week delay and no additional cost to the municipality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Council had recently approved switching to a metal roof<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collapse happened a month and half after council approved moving from asphalt shingles to a standing seam metal roof maybe possible by a provincial capital renewal funding grant. It\u2019ll be the sustainability of a great fire department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Council approved the metal roof at a cost of approximately $240,000. Beal told council that the asphalt shingle roof was originally chosen as a compromise to keep the project within budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was thought of, but we have to make compromises. The asphalt shingle was initially a compromise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Architects and engineers are inspecting the steel structure to confirm the rest of the building remains safe.
