Over 60 per cent of respondents acknowledged they had been harassed in some form during the course of their role.

Estabrooks said the harassment of public officials has become “alarmingly normalized with widespread verbal and online abuse creating fear, emotional fatigue and discouraging public service participation.”

“This behaviour is not okay and needs to stop,” he said. “It is sad that civility in our society has slipped to this point.”

Estabrooks says he personally has experienced several instances of inappropriate behaviour and noted that is not surprising that “we see turnover of good people in the roles of elected officials.”

Mayor Andrew Black and Councillor Allison Butcher also attended the symposium, with both stating they were pleased to see this issue coming to the forefront.

Butcher said she’s looking forward to seeing the final report, which she is optimistic will be useful once the process is completed.

Estabrooks noted many recommendations came out of the symposium for councillors to consider, including: posting a highly-visible rules of conduct in council chambers; reviewing the layout of council chambers to make it more welcoming and less of a “us versus them” environment; engaging residents with a civility campaign; strengthening council training on proper conduct during meetings; instituting a civility pledge for presenters to read and sign before addressing council; and ensuring council members themselves reviews their code of conduct policies.
—-

The curling season in Sackville will get under way next week, but it’s a bit later this yearthan usual.

Board members with the Sackville Curling Club say they are getting set to kick off their 130th season starting Monday, December 8, with over 180 local curlers ranging in age from 6 to 86 registered in a variety of leagues.

They say the season was delayed approximately four weeks this year as the club undertook the second phase of a major and much-needed upgrade of its ice plant. Last year, circulation pumps and motors were replaced; while this year, a new chiller, compressor and motor were installed. Unfortunately, there were delays in getting various components from the US for assembly in Ontario, resulting in the month-long delay.

This equipment is the heart of the ice-making system and had reached the end of its 20-year service life. The club has invested more than $150,000 to ensure curling will continue in the Tantramar area for years to come.

Club members look forward to getting back on the ice, and some curlers have even been taking in some ice time at the Amherst Curling Club while awaiting their re-opening. The club is an integral part of the Tantramar community, providing facilities for birthday parties and social events. It also hosts adult education classes, fitness classes, judo and karate classes, a salsa dance class and an after-school care program.

—

Seniors in the Tantramar area who want to share in some Christmas spirit can look forward to a couple of events this month hosted by their local Nursing Home Without Walls organization.

Nursing Home Without Walls Tantramar is hosting a Holiday Wrapping event this Fridayafternoon and a Christmas-themed string art workshop on December 16th, both activities open to residents 60-plus.

For the first event, happening this Friday, December 5 from 3-5 pm, seniors are invited to join Mount Allison volunteers at the Drew Nursing Home’s Parsons Lounge for a fun, free and festive afternoon, where they will wrap gifts together. Organizers welcome seniors to bring any gifts they’d like to wrap and they will provide the supplies and snacks.

On Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 2-4 pm, NHWW is hosting a Christmas-themed string art workshop with Alicia Sterling at Café Tintamarre (in the accessible Information Centre space at 34 Mallard Drive). There will be delicious warm beverages and snacks provided, as well as string art supplies and a beautiful piece of framed, handmade art attendees can bring home or gift to a loved one. RSVP is required for this event, so call 506-688-4688 if you are interested.

Dec 1-7 The Sackville Food Bank has launched its annual Holiday Turkey Drive, helping to make the season a little bit merrier for those in need in the Tantramar community.
