Drivers in New Brunswick who park their cars on some streets in Saint John during parking bans intended for snow clearing will face higher fines this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initial fine will rise to 60-dollars from the current 30-dollars if tickets are paid within 15 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fine will rise to 80 dollars, then 100 dollars after each additional 15 days of nonpayment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the fines aren’t paid, the vehicle owner would be charged, which could lead to a stiffer 125-dollar penalty \u2014 up from the current 100-dollars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Invasive Crabs)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ottawa is trying a new commercial fishery in southwest New Brunswick in a bid to reduce the number of invasive European green crabs in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson says the one-year pilot project will provide economic opportunities for Indigenous and local harvesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Federal officials say European green crabs, which can be used as lobster bait, have a negative impact eel grass, dulse beds and shellfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Harvesters can now apply for a licence in the new fishery, which is slated to kick off next spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NB-Environmental-Assessments)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New Brunswick has signed a ‘one project, one review’ agreement for environmental assessments with the federal government, making it the first province to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Premier Susan Holt made the announcement today alongside federal Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Holt says the agreement would eliminate duplications and simplify the environmental assessment process for major projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The premier was adamant that the streamlined assessment would maintain high environmental standards for projects and include meaningful consultation with First Nations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Child-Murder-Parole)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Parole Board of Canada has granted day parole for six months to the Nova Scotian woman sentenced to life for strangling her 12-year-old daughter in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Penny Boudreau will not be allowed to contact certain people and must report all relationships with men to her parole officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Boudreau, who was granted a 60-day unescorted pass from prison earlier this year, will stay in a halfway house and can apply for full parole after serving 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for killing her daughter Karissa, claiming the girl ran away after an argument outside a grocery store in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NL-Fiscal-Update)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Newfoundland and Labrador\u2019s new Progressive Conservative government says the provincial deficit is expected to reach nearly one-billion dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finance Minister Craig Pardy says the province\u2019s financial situation is more challenging than what was forecast by the previous Liberal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The provincial deficit is now expected to hit 948-million dollars, compared with the 626-million forecast by the Liberals before the October election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Pardy says the province’s economy is performing better than expected, and its real G-D-P is expected to grow by 5.3 per cent by the end of the fiscal year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(NS-Bar-Robbery-Charges)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police in Nova Scotia have charged a man accused of robbing the Sydney Mines Legion with a second robbery at a tavern in Bras d\u2019Or on the same night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cape Breton Regional Police say officers were called to both the Blue Mist Tavern and the legion in the early evening of December 4th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Staff at each of the bars reported that a person had entered with a weapon, demanded money and then ran off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect was arrested in Sydney eight days later and charged with the legion robbery, before being charged for the second robbery at the Blue Mist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
