{"id":70739,"date":"2025-12-23T09:58:32","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T13:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/?p=70739"},"modified":"2025-12-23T22:33:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T02:33:34","slug":"after-nb-power-presentation-coalition-remains-opposed-to-centre-village-gas-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/after-nb-power-presentation-coalition-remains-opposed-to-centre-village-gas-plant\/","title":{"rendered":"After NB Power presentation, coalition remains opposed to Centre Village gas plant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opposition continues even as NB Power warns of future energy shortages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NB Power executives spent nearly two hours answering questions from Tantramar council last week about a proposed gas turbine facility planned for Centre Village, but the leader of a local opposition coalition says the presentation did not resolve her concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"5f4e4b\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #5f4e4b;\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1202\" height=\"1076\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1202px) 100vw, 1202px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-23-095649.avif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-70742 not-transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-23-095649.avif 1202w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-23-095649-600x537.avif 600w, https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-23-095649-768x687.avif 768w\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sup>Lisa Griffin, Protect the Chignecto Isthmus Coalition coordinator, speaks to a crowd in early November | Photo: Clinton Davis \/ CHMA News<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lisa Griffin is the coalition coordinator for the Protect the Chignecto Isthmus Coalition, a group that began organizing around the project months before NB Power appeared before council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>Hear the radio version<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/DEC-23-2025.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Griffin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/public-information-session-draws-crowd-over-proposed-chignecto-isthmus-gas-plant\/\">spoke publicly about the proposal<\/a> in late November, raising concerns about how it fit into NB Power\u2019s long-term planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNB Power has something called an integrated resource plan and this plant is not in it,\u201d Griffin said. \u201cSo suddenly we\u2019re taking a giant U-turn and choosing gas plants that are not even in the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also pointed to NB Power\u2019s stated climate commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTheir highest priority is to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. These are their words, not mine,\u201d Griffin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that speech, Griffin told CHMA the coalition was still working to understand the technical and regulatory aspects of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe easy part has been getting sign-ons, because everyone opposes this,\u201d she said. \u201cThe hardest part is keeping up with documentation that isn\u2019t in our wheelhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Griffin also attended Tantramar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/nb-power-faces-tough-questions-at-tantramar-council-meeting\/\">council\u2019s special meeting on December 17<\/a>, where NB Power\u2019s chief commercial officer Brad Coady outlined the utility\u2019s case for the project, arguing it is needed to maintain grid reliability as renewable energy expands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After hearing that presentation, Griffin said her concerns remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat stood out to me was the back and forth on fact versus misinformation,\u201d she said. \u201cA lot of what we do is myth-busting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She challenged NB Power\u2019s framing of peak demand, pointing to the utility\u2019s own planning documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTheir integrated resource plan shows that peak demand adds up to about ten hours a year,\u201d Griffin said. \u201cYou don\u2019t build a 400-megawatt gas plant on a protected wetland to take care of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Griffin also questioned NB Power\u2019s warnings about future shortages, arguing the issue is system management rather than total supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey don\u2019t need power most of the time,\u201d she said. \u201cThey need power during peak times, and even then, they don\u2019t need more power. They need to manage the system better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She noted that NB Power announced a renewed call for battery storage proposals the same day it appeared before council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey just put out an expression of interest for battery storage,\u201d Griffin said. \u201cSo it could potentially be an alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite attending the meeting and hearing NB Power\u2019s explanations directly, Griffin said the coalition\u2019s position has not changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not a prudent plan,\u201d she said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t communicated in a prudent way, and it\u2019s not financially responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Protect the Chignecto Isthmus Coalition (PCIC) now plans to focus on the regulatory process ahead, including environmental review and hearings before the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the weekend, strong winds, not energy shortages, knocked out power across New Brunswick for more than 50,000 customers.
